Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given line graphs depict the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and how much time was spent on doing housework in one nation from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it can be seen that owners of washing machine and refrigerator were the lowest in the initial year, while they were the highest in the last year than vacuum cleaner owners. Moreover, maximum working hours were spent in 1920, although they declined significantly in the next years.

Looking at the graph for details, nobody owned refrigerator in 1920, although there was a significant incline to 50% in 1940 and reached the peak in 1980, after which it remained stable until 2019. Moreover, washing machine and vacuum cleaner were owned by 30% and 40% in 1920, while this number increased swiflty to 60% and 50% in 1940. Eventhough ownership of vacuum cleaner was remained under between 60% and 72% in the following years, the number of washing machine rose to 100% until 2019.

Moving to the next, 50 hours were spent on housework in 1920, after which this proportion followed a downward trend throughout the period of 89 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the overall fall in housework time and describe broad changes in appliance ownership, so the response addresses both graphs. However, several key figures and comparisons are inaccurate, which limits how fully the data are reported. For example, refrigerators were at about 2% in 1920, not unowned, and reached 100% by 1980; washing-machine ownership rose only to about 75% by 2019, not 100%. The overview also says washing machines and refrigerators were the least common initially, although refrigerators were clearly the least common and vacuum cleaners were below washing machines. The vacuum-cleaner trend is misrepresented as staying between 60% and 72%, despite rising to 100%. Report the main endpoints and contrasting trends accurately to strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. This gives the reader a coherent route through the two graphs. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Moving to the next” help signal progression, although some are repetitive or do not express the relationship precisely. The appliance paragraph combines several series and time points in a way that becomes difficult to follow, particularly where the washing-machine and vacuum-cleaner figures are compared. The final paragraph is very brief and gives only the starting point and general direction. Grouping the appliance trends more clearly and adding a key endpoint for housework would make the progression more balanced and the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably varied range for describing trends, including “significant incline,” “remained stable,” “rose” and “downward trend.” These choices show an attempt to use task-specific vocabulary, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “owners of washing machine and refrigerator” refers to people rather than household ownership, while “maximum working hours” is not a natural description of housework time. “Followed a downward trend” is suitable, but the sentence does not specify the final figure. There are also spelling errors in “swiflty” and “Eventhough.” Use precise phrases such as “the proportion of households owning…” and check spelling and collocations to make the description more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “although” and “while,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist, especially with articles, agreement and verb forms. For example, “owners of washing machine and refrigerator were” needs clearer plural phrasing and articles, and “vacuum cleaner was remained” uses an incorrect passive construction. In “the number of washing machine rose,” the noun should be plural or recast as a proportion. The sentence beginning “nobody owned refrigerator” also needs an article, apart from its inaccurate data claim. Your longer sentences sometimes join several comparisons, making grammatical control harder to maintain. Practise accurate trend-reporting patterns such as “ownership rose to…” and “the figure remained stable.”
