Student answer (Band 6.0)

Given line graphs depicts how ownership of electrical appliance (in percentage) changes within the timeframe of almost a century. The data also represents how hours of housework has declined throughout the period.

Only 30% of household were using vaccum cleaner in 1920 but a steady rise can be seen throughout the period and covered all household until 2000. since then, the record has not experienced downfall.

In 1920, washing machine were the most popular with 40% of household owning it. It maintained a steady growth until 1960 where 70% of household were owning it but a gradual decrease can be seen until 1980 with just above 60% of house owning it. It again lifted up it sales and managed to cover above 70% until 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers the main trends and makes relevant comparisons: refrigerator ownership rises from almost none to full coverage, vacuum-cleaner ownership reaches 100% by 2000, and washing-machine ownership fluctuates around two-thirds to three-quarters. The final reference to housework also captures its overall decline. These features support a clear overview, and the account is generally grounded in the chart. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were at about 2% in 1920, rather than simply “not used,” and housework fell to 11 hours, not 10. The opening does not clearly identify the country or the full period. To strengthen the response further, include a concise overview of both appliance ownership and housework, and report key figures more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to appliance trends and then a concluding statement. Grouping the refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner trends before discussing washing machines gives the reader some logical organisation. However, the progression is not fully clear: the housework trend is mentioned only in the introduction and conclusion, with no supporting detail in the body. Several transitions are awkward or repetitive, including “In the contrary” and repeated references to records not experiencing a downfall. The conclusion also introduces a claim about technology causing the decline, which the charts do not establish. Organise the body into clearer comparisons, use linking phrases accurately, and connect the housework data to the appliance trends without implying causation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “rose dramatically,” “steady rise,” “gradual decrease,” and “maintained.” These choices help communicate the broad movements in the data. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural, such as “highest demand” for household ownership, “covered all household,” and “lifted up it sales.” “Record” is also repeated where a direct description of the percentage would be clearer. Spelling errors such as “vaccum” and “weely” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language, for example “the proportion of households owning…” and “reached 100%,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “although” and “where,” and the main trends are usually understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure and grammar make parts less clear. For example, “Given line graphs depicts” has problems with the article and subject–verb agreement, while “hours of housework has declined” does not agree with the plural subject. In “washing machine were the most popular,” the verb also needs to agree with its subject. Articles and plurals are inconsistent in phrases such as “30% of household” and “all household.” Use a consistent past-tense frame for the historical data, check agreement and articles, and punctuate sentence openings consistently.
