Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and declining housework time, and you report some relevant figures, such as washing machines at 40% in 1920 and refrigerators reaching 100%. However, the response only partially covers the task: the second chart is introduced but its figures and trend are not described in the body, which ends with an unfinished phrase. Several details are also inaccurate. Washing-machine ownership did not finish at its lowest point; it rose to about 75% in 2019, and refrigerators began at about 2%, not 30%. The overview also says washing machines had the highest initial figure, although vacuum cleaners were lower only than washing machines, while the later comparisons are unclear. Select the main trends accurately and report both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and linking words such as “Meanwhile” and “Whereas” show an effort to connect comparisons. However, progression is difficult to follow because ideas are repeated: the washing-machine and refrigerator trends appear in both the overview and the detail paragraph. References such as “they” do not clearly identify which appliance is meant, and several transitions are used awkwardly. Most importantly, the final paragraph begins “In the other chart” but provides no information, leaving the response incomplete and disrupting its organisation. Use one paragraph for the overview, then separate, logically ordered details for the appliance chart and the housework chart.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “fluctuating,” and “remained,” and you attempt a range of ways to describe change. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “the percentage … accounted for highest figures,” “comprised of lowest numbers,” and “in the same range.” Repetition of “percentage” and “kept” also limits flexibility. Spelling errors such as “illustates,” “vaccum,” “postion,” and “consistantly” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, say that a figure “stood at” a percentage or “rose to” a level rather than saying it “accounted for” that figure.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including contrasts introduced by “while,” “whereas,” and “meanwhile.” Nevertheless, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “the percentage of washing machine accounted for highest figures” has a faulty sentence structure, while “the number of hours … were recorded” has subject–verb disagreement. Capitalisation and punctuation are also unreliable, as in “Overall, In” and the repeated spaces before commas. Pronouns such as “They” are not consistently clear in reference. Build accurate basic sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; check agreement, articles, sentence boundaries and punctuation during revision.
