IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The charts are showing data about the usage of different household appliances to accomplish the house tasks and how the dependency on appliances changes with the time from 1920 to 2019.
The use of washing machines in 1920 was about 40 percent which rose upto 60 percent in 1940 and usage did not increase as it remained 60 percent from 1980 to 2019. Refrigerator use showed a marvellous rise as percentage shifted from zero percent in 1920 to 50 percent in 1940, 90 percent in 1980 and it maintained its usage percentage uptil 2019 year. The usage of vacuum was 30 percent in 1920 which rose upto 50 percent in 1940, reached upto 60 percent in 1960, hitted the figure 80 percent in 2000 and usage reached upto 100 percent in 2019.
Other line graph showed number of hours spent in doing different house work. The time spent in doing housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning was more in 1920 as showen by 50 percent and the time spent in these activities decreased to 30 percent in 1960 and it further decreased upto 10 percent in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern that appliance ownership increased while time spent on housework fell, and you include figures for all three appliances and the hours graph. However, several details are inaccurate: washing-machine ownership rose to 70% in 1960 and ended at 75%, rather than remaining at 60% from 1980 onward; refrigerator ownership was about 2% in 1920, not zero, and reached 100% by 1980; vacuum ownership was about 70% in 1960 and 90% in 1980, not 60% and 80%. Housework fell to 20 hours in 1960 and 15 in 1980 and 2000, rather than 30 and 10 at the stated points. The overview is also implicit rather than clearly summarised, so the main comparisons are not fully established.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it first discusses appliance ownership and then turns to housework, with the two paragraphs making the topic shift clear. Sequencing within the appliance paragraph is generally understandable, and phrases such as “which rose” and “Other line graph showed” help connect information. However, the first paragraph moves through each appliance without a clear overview or grouping of the most important trends, and some links are awkward or repetitive, including repeated use of “usage” and “which rose upto.” The final paragraph gives only a brief account of the hours data. A separate opening overview and more deliberate comparisons between the series would make progression clearer and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “maintained,” “decreased,” and “housework,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “marvellous rise,” but this is too evaluative for a neutral chart report. Several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “usage of vacuum” is better expressed as ownership of vacuum cleaners, and “dependency on appliances” suggests reliance rather than the proportion of households owning them. “Hitted” and “showen” are spelling or word-form errors, while “upto” should be written as two words. Aim for precise, neutral trend language and accurate collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, “The usage of vacuum was 30 percent in 1920 which rose…” and the sentence describing housework activities. The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. In “The charts are showing data,” the present continuous is not appropriate for describing a static chart; use “show.” The clause “usage did not increase as it remained 60 percent from 1980 to 2019” is structurally awkward, and “as showen by 50 percent” has an incomplete construction. There are also inconsistent or unclear time references in the data sentences. Use accurate past-tense reporting and check clause structure, articles, and punctuation when combining comparisons.
