Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line charts illustrate the changes in electrical appliance ownership and amount of time spent by households doing housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the proportion of households owning electrical appliances experienced an upward trend throughout the timeframe, while housework done by the residents every week declined over the years.

In 1920, no resident owned a refrigerator, while 30% of households owned a vacuum cleaner. Over the years, both experienced a dramatic rise in their ownership by households. The proportion of households owning both appliances converged at 100% in 2000 and remained the same until 2019. By contrast, the percentage of the residents owning a washing machine fluctuated over the decades. The ownership of washing machines was highest in 1920 compared with the other two electrical appliances, while it had lowest proportion by the end of the period. However, the proportion rose steadily to 70% in 1960 and then slightly dipped to around 63% before climbing to around 72% in 2019.

The amount of time spent washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning declined significantly over the period. In 1920, households worked 50 hours per week, whereas the time spent doing chores decreased in the next four decades reaching to 20 hours per week in 1960 and further dropping to around10 hours a week by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and give a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework hours fell. The response also selects useful comparisons, including refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching full household ownership by 2000 and washing-machine ownership rising overall despite a dip. Most reported figures match the chart, but “no resident owned a refrigerator” is inaccurate: ownership was about 2% in 1920, not zero. The claim that washing-machine ownership was highest in 1920 compared with the other appliances is also misleading, since it was below vacuum-cleaner ownership. To strengthen the report, describe the washing-machine series more precisely as fluctuating and compare its levels accurately with the other appliances.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with a logical progression from appliance ownership to housework hours. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “By contrast,” and “However” help signal comparisons, and the final paragraph clearly presents the downward trend in housework. Some connections could be more precise: “both” in “both experienced a dramatic rise” requires the reader to infer which appliances are meant, and “the next four decades” is not an especially clear reference to the period ending in 1960. Grouping the appliance trends more systematically and using explicit year ranges would make the progression even smoother and the references easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “upward trend,” “dramatic rise,” “fluctuated,” “dipped,” and “declined significantly.” These choices allow you to compare changes without relying only on basic verbs. There are occasional imprecise or awkward collocations, however. “No resident owned a refrigerator” is not only factually inaccurate but also an unnatural way to describe the chart’s household measure; “the proportion of households with a refrigerator” is more appropriate. “Households worked 50 hours” also suggests employment rather than domestic tasks, while “the ownership … had lowest proportion” is awkwardly phrased. More consistent use of terms such as “households,” “ownership rate,” and “housework hours” would improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a useful range of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “while,” a contrast using “whereas,” and clauses describing changes over time. Most sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. A few errors remain: “it had lowest proportion” needs an article (“it had the lowest proportion”), and “reaching to 20 hours” should be “reaching 20 hours.” In “the next four decades reaching to 20 hours,” the participial phrase is also attached somewhat awkwardly; separating the stages would improve control. The missing space in “around10” is a punctuation/spacing slip. Greater accuracy with articles, verb patterns and sentence boundaries would make the otherwise varied grammar more consistently polished.
