Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given line graphs illustrate the oercentage of householders with electrical appliances such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and number of hours of housework per week, per household from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clearly seen that overall percentage of electrical appliances had been increased incredibly throughout the period. Meanwhile, number of hours per week declined significantly from 1920 to 2019.
At first glance, it is clear that in 1920, 40% people were used washing machines, fllowed by 60% in 1940 and 70% in 1960. However, after that it fluctuated and it surged up to 75% in 2019. Furthermore, from 1920 to 2000, there was a considerable incline in uses of vacuum cleaner from 30% to 100% and till 2019 it remained stabled at 100%. Refrigerator

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad contrast accurately: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. You also report several washing-machine figures and the vacuum-cleaner rise to 100%, which are relevant features. However, the response addresses the task only partially: the refrigerator section is left unfinished, and the housework trend is not supported with any figures. The washing-machine description is also imprecise when you say it “fluctuated”; after reaching about 70% in 1960, it dips slightly before rising again. The overview is useful but general, and the response is 22 words below the required minimum. To improve, complete the comparison of all four series and select key start, end, and turning-point values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning to describe the data. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. However, the progression is incomplete: the final word, “Refrigerator,” leaves the discussion abruptly unfinished, and there is no developed paragraph covering the remaining information, especially housework hours. Some transitions are also used without a clear comparison, and the sequence of figures is not consistently organised into a complete account. Group the appliance trends together, then describe the decline in housework, using clear paragraphing and links that show contrast or change over time.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “declined significantly,” “considerable incline,” and “remained stable,” showing an attempt to describe trends rather than simply list figures. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “percentage of householders” for the share of households, “incline in uses,” and “surged up” for a modest increase. There are also spelling errors, including “oercentage,” “fllowed,” and “stabled,” which reduce precision. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent terms for ownership and household proportions. For example, describe the percentage of households that owned an appliance and say that ownership “rose” or “levelled off.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast in “Meanwhile, number of hours per week declined…” and a time sequence beginning “from 1920 to 2000.” The main trends are generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms are noticeable. For example, “40% people were used washing machines” has an incorrect passive construction; write “40% of households had a washing machine.” In “overall percentage … had been increased,” the verb form is incorrect, and “number of hours” needs an article. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, as in “machines, fllowed.” Use straightforward past-tense sentences and check articles, subject–verb patterns, and punctuation.
