Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first line chart illustrates the percentage of households with electrical appliances of three different categories, whereas second line chart represents the number of hours of housework per week and per household between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, refrigerator started with the least percentage and ended up with the highest percentage over the time and almost caught up with the vacuum cleaner. The number of hours per week gradually decreased in 2019.

In 1920, refrigerator accounted for zero and which then sharply increased at 90% in 1960 and then in 2000 reach to the peak at 100%. Vacuum cleaner recorded 30% in 1920 and rose dramatically to 90% in 2000, where met to referigerator at the same level. Washing machine was slightly higher then all at 40% then showed fluctuation, drop in 1980 at nearly 60% before recovering to above 70% in 2019.

The number of hourse of housework per week and per household was at peak level in 1920 with 50 hourse then steeply decreased to 20 hourse in 1960, ahead it modestly fell to 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview of the main trends: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. You also select relevant figures, including the rise in refrigerator ownership and the decline in housework from 50 to around 11 hours. Some details, however, are inaccurate or insufficiently developed. Refrigerators were about 2% in 1920, not zero, and reached 90% in 1960 rather than rising to that figure from zero. Vacuum-cleaner ownership reached 90% in 1980, not 2000, and washing-machine ownership dipped to about 65% in 1980, not nearly 60%. The overview also says the refrigerator almost caught up with the vacuum cleaner, although both reached 100% by the end. More precise comparisons across the years would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a sensible overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph about appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. This makes the two charts easy to follow, and time markers such as “In 1920” and “in 1960” help establish sequence. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear, as in “In 1920, refrigerator accounted for zero and which then sharply increased,” and “ahead it modestly fell.” The appliance paragraph also moves between categories without consistently comparing their trends, while the overview’s claim that the refrigerator “almost caught up” is not clearly supported. Use more direct transitions and organise the appliance details around shared milestones or contrasts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary for this task, including “sharply increased,” “rose dramatically,” “fluctuation,” and “decreased.” These choices help communicate change, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “accounted for zero” is less natural than “stood at about 2%,” and “met to refrigerator” does not express the comparison clearly. “Peak level” is also an awkward description of the housework figure, which was simply highest at the start. There are spelling errors in “referigerator” and “hourse,” and “slightly higher then all” is unclear. Aim for accurate chart language and check spelling, especially for repeated key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast in the opening sentence and clauses describing changes over time. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “whereas second line chart” needs an article, and “refrigerator started” would be more accurate as “refrigerator ownership started.” Verb forms are inconsistent in “in 2000 reach to the peak” and “where met to referigerator”; the latter also lacks a clear subject. The sentence beginning “In 1920, refrigerator accounted for zero and which then…” is not grammatically complete. Practise forming clear subject–verb clauses and maintaining consistent past-tense reporting.
