IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph shows the percentage of households with electrical appliances in one country between year1920 to 2019.
The percentage of washing machine has not much more change among other two electrical appliances.
As shown in the line graph, the first electrical appliance is refrigerator which has the sharpest change in percentage of households. The percentage of refrigerator is zero in year 1920 but then sharply goes high to 90% in year 1960 and goes to 100% in 1980 and remains same till year 2019. The second electrical appliance is vacuum cleaner which is 30% in year 1920 and then sharply high to 100% in year 2000 and remain same till 2019. The third appliance is washing machine which has 40% in year 1920 and then high to 70 percent in year 1960 then decrease in 1980 and again increase slightly to about 75% in 2019. The washing machine has not much change in percentage as compared to other appliance.
In the next line graph the line shows the number of hours hours per week.
The number of hours is 50 in year 1920 and then sharply decrease to 20 in year 1960 then again decrease slightly to the number zero in year 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main overall pattern that appliance ownership generally increased while housework time fell, and you report several key figures, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. However, the response only partially covers the task: the second graph is described briefly and inaccurately, with housework said to fall to zero rather than about 11 hours in 2019; it was still around 15 hours in 1980 and 2000. The refrigerator figure in 1920 was about 2%, not zero. The overview is also unclear: the washing machine changed less overall, but its ownership did fluctuate. A clearer overview comparing both graphs and more accurate reporting of the final housework trend would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has some organisation: it introduces the appliance graph, discusses each appliance, and then turns to the housework graph. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is limited because the appliance descriptions are presented as a sequence (“first,” “second,” “third”) rather than grouped or compared by their trends, and the second graph receives only a short final paragraph. Linking phrases such as “then” and “as shown” are repeated, while the relationship between rising appliance ownership and falling housework time is not made clear. Use a distinct overview paragraph, organise details into meaningful comparisons, and vary linking language so the progression feels less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “sharply,” “decrease,” and “remains,” so the reader can generally understand the trends being described. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “has not much more change,” “sharply high,” and “the number of hours hours per week.” Repetition of “percentage,” “appliance,” and “then” also makes the account less flexible. Choose standard trend collocations such as “rose sharply,” “remained stable,” and “declined gradually,” and use “ownership” where appropriate. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish a rise, a fluctuation, and a plateau without relying on the same basic expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect events in longer sentences using “but then,” “and,” and “which,” and the main meaning is often recoverable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction and grammatical forms. Examples include “between year1920 to 2019,” “The percentage of washing machine,” and “then sharply goes high”; these show problems with articles, plural forms, prepositions, and tense consistency. The final sentence also has an unclear construction: “then again decrease slightly to the number zero.” Use past-tense verbs consistently for the historical data, check subject–verb agreement, and practise accurate comparative sentence patterns. Shorter, well-controlled sentences would improve clarity before you attempt more complex structures.
