IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided charts below illustrate the developments in ownership of electrical appliances and number of hours spent doing housework in households in one nation in 1920, 1940, 1960, 1980, 2000 and 2019.
Overall, the two main changes were the usage of electricity through using vacuum cleaners and refrigerators throughout the period.
Turning to the proportion of households, in 1920, using electrical refrigerators stood at 0% and experienced a significant upward trend at 100% in 2000, later, this proportion stood at 100% constantly until 2019. Whereas using washing machines in 1920 started at 40% and flactuated over the period to around 75% in 2019. Vacuum cleaners represented a considerable increase during the period from 30% in 1920 to 100 % in 2019.
Regarding the second chart which represented the number of hours of housework per week, in 1920, the housework stood at 50% and throughout the period it witnessed a huge decline to just 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover both charts and identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework time. Several figures are accurate, including washing machines at 40% initially and about 75% in 2019, and vacuum cleaners rising from 30% to full ownership. However, the overview is incomplete: it focuses on refrigerators and vacuum cleaners but does not clearly summarise the decline in housework, a central feature. Some details are inaccurate or imprecise: refrigerator ownership began at about 2%, not 0%, and reached 100% by 1980, rather than 2000. Housework is measured in hours, not a percentage, and fell to about 11 hours, not 10. Develop the overview and report the main comparisons more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. Phrases such as “Turning to” and “Regarding the second chart” help signal shifts, and the information is generally easy to follow. This coherent overall arrangement is a strength. However, the overview is too narrow, and the final paragraph is very brief compared with the appliance discussion, so the two charts are not balanced. Some linking is also mechanical or awkward, particularly “Whereas” beginning a sentence and the sequence “later, this proportion stood…”. Use clearer connections between comparisons and give the housework trend a fuller, integrated account to make progression more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “upward trend,” “fluctuated,” “considerable increase,” and “decline.” These choices help communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural collocations: “usage of electricity through using” does not describe appliance ownership, while “housework stood at 50%” confuses the measure with a percentage. “Electrical refrigerators” is less natural than “refrigerators,” and “represented a considerable increase” is an awkward way to describe the vacuum-cleaner trend. Spelling also needs attention in “flactuated.” Choose precise chart language such as “ownership,” “accounted for,” and “hours per week,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the introductory relative clause “which represented the number of hours…” and the time phrase “from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2019.” Most sentences remain understandable, so grammatical errors rarely obstruct the message. Some sentence construction and punctuation are less controlled. For example, “Whereas using washing machines…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “in 1920, the housework stood…” has an awkward grammatical pattern for reporting a measurement. The long refrigerator sentence also joins several stages with commas, making its structure difficult to manage. Use complete clauses, separate stages with full stops or semicolons, and practise accurate comparative structures such as “rose from… to…”.
