IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two line charts shown; first one is the percentage of households with electrical appliances between the years 1920 and 2019, while the second line chart is about the number of hours of housework (per week, per household) in the same years 1920 and 2019.
The electrical appliances included in the first line chart data are Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vaccum cleaner. Washing machine had the most usage in households in 1920, at around 40% followed by Vaccum cleaner at 30% and Refrigerator at lowest 0%. The washing machine saw an increase in its usage in 1940, with its peak at 1960 and then a decrease with the balanced usage in years [redacted phone]. Vaccum cleaner saw a gradual increase in its usage, alongwith, Refrigerator which got more popular and important after 1920, both appliances reaching thir top peak of 100% in 2000 and being at 100% throughout till 2019.
The number of hours of housework (per week per household) was the highest at 50% in 1920 which decreased with the usage of refrigerator and vaccum cleaner and reached 10% in 2019 a total of 40% reduction, in 99 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify both charts and report the broad pattern that appliance ownership generally rose while housework hours fell. You also include several relevant figures, such as washing machines at about 40% and vacuum cleaners at 30% in 1920. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear or accurate: the washing-machine figure peaks at about 70% in 1960, dips in 1980, then rises to 75% in 2019, rather than showing a peak followed by balanced usage in 2000–2019. The refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reach 100% at different times, not both in 2000. Housework is measured in hours, not percentages, and falls from 50 to about 11, rather than 10. More precise comparisons and a clearer summary of the main trends would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it introduces the charts, discusses appliance ownership, and then turns to housework. This gives the reader an overall structure, and phrases such as “while” and “followed by” help connect information. However, the appliance paragraph combines several trends in long sentences, making the comparisons harder to follow; for example, the sentence beginning “Vaccum cleaner saw a gradual increase” also introduces the refrigerator and their endpoints. The final paragraph is very brief and does not compare the housework trend with the appliance data in a clearly controlled way. Use separate sentences or paragraphs for the main appliance patterns, and add a concise overview before the details to make progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “gradual increase,” “decrease,” and “reached,” so the main trends are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “got more popular and important,” though this is imprecise for chart reporting; “ownership became more widespread” would be more suitable. Some word choices and collocations are awkward, including “most usage,” “balanced usage,” and “top peak.” Spelling errors such as “Vaccum” and “thir” also reduce accuracy. In addition, describing housework as “50%” confuses the unit and weakens precision. Aim for standard trend language and check spelling, while using “hours” for the second chart.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while,” “with,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening phrase “There are two line charts shown” is awkwardly constructed, and “in the same years 1920 and 2019” does not accurately express the full period. In “Washing machine had the most usage,” the singular noun needs an article, while “with its peak at 1960 and then a decrease” is not a well-formed parallel structure. The final sentence also has an unclear comparison in “a total of 40% reduction, in 99 years.” Use complete, parallel clauses and check articles, prepositions, and punctuation to make the relationships between figures clearer.
