Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate how households have adjusted their needs for holding eletrical appliances and the time taken to carry out chores in households during the years 1920 and 2019. The first line graph demonstrates data in percentages for three different appliances which are washing machines, refrigerator and vaccum cleaners. The line graph next to this, depicts number of hours spent on household acitivities per week in every house.

At first glance it is clearly observed that the ownership of electrical appliances has significantly increased when comparing the years from 1920 to 2019. As this trend of automation increases the number of hours dedicated to household chorse drops drastically from 1920 to 2019. Items like refrigerator gain sharp popularity amongst the other two and peaks in the year 2000 where it meets the vacuum cleaner graph.

Looking in depth, at the first graph refrigerators start from 0 in the year 1920 and peak by the year 1980, where almost 100% of households had bought a fridge. Washing machines, on the other hand begin from 40% of the households in 1920, and go through an unstable trend hitting its lowest point at around 65% and regaining numbers in the subsequent years to reach its maximum at 75% in the year 2019. Similar to refrigerator, vacuum cleaners also witness a steep growth pattern. It starts as low as 30% in 1920 and maxes out to 100% in 2000, from where it remains stable.

When observing number of hours a household spent on daily chores, a vivid trend of degrowth is seen. Starting out with the highest point 50 hours per week in 1920 to going as low as 10 hours per week in 2019. As residents acquired more automative methods hours spent on daily acitivites in a house decreased.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and give a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rises, while weekly housework time falls. The main comparisons are supported with relevant figures, including the washing-machine fluctuation and the refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner plateaus. Most reported values match the chart, but the refrigerator begins at about 2%, rather than 0%, and the final housework figure is about 11 hours, rather than 10. The claim that refrigerators peak in 2000 is also imprecise: they reach 100% by 1980 and remain there. These are small inaccuracies within an otherwise well-selected account. To strengthen the report further, make the overview more exact and avoid implying that appliance ownership alone caused the reduction in housework time.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information progresses logically from the broad trends to individual series. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand,” “similar to refrigerator” and “when observing” help signal comparisons and shifts in focus. The overview also gives the reader a useful map of the main patterns. Some connections are less precise: “Items like refrigerator gain sharp popularity … and peaks” combines a general comparison with a specific endpoint, and the final paragraph repeats the decline already stated in the overview without adding much comparison. Use clearer references to the relevant series and integrate the housework figures with the appliance trends to make progression more efficient.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a varied range of vocabulary, including “significantly increased,” “steep growth pattern” and “remains stable,” which is appropriate for describing trends. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision: “adjusted their needs for holding” does not clearly describe ownership, “degrowth” is not a natural term here, and “automative methods” is an unsuitable phrase. There are also spelling errors, including “eletrical,” “vaccum,” “acitivities” and “chorse.” Some expressions, such as “maxes out,” are too informal for an academic report. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, use “ownership,” “declined” and “household appliances.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses such as “Washing machines, on the other hand…” and a subordinate clause beginning “As residents acquired…”. Meaning is generally clear, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “Items like refrigerator gain … and peaks,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the article is missing; “the refrigerator … gains” would be clearer. “Washing machines … begin” also shifts into the present tense while the report describes historical data. The sentence beginning “Starting out with the highest point…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Check agreement, maintain consistent past-tense reporting, and ensure each sentence has a main clause.
