Student answer (Band 6.5)

The first line graph illustrates percentage of households with washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, while second line graph displays number of hours of housework per week per household in one country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, proportion of households with all electric appliances significantly increased while number of hours of housework per week, per household dramatically went downwards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both graphs and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. The main trends are supported with relevant figures, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and housework declining from 50 to about 11 hours. The account also notes the vacuum cleaner’s rise to full ownership and the washing machine’s later fluctuation. A few details are inaccurate or imprecise: refrigerators began at about 2%, not 0%, and washing machines rose from 40% to 70% by 1960, rather than simply starting at 40% and rising to 70% “in between” those years. The overview could also identify that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached saturation, whereas washing machines remained lower. Overall, the key features are selected and reported clearly, with some over-generalisation in the comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, appliance details, and housework figures. This gives the reader a logical route through the two graphs, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Then,” and “However” help signal changes. The appliance paragraph is less smoothly organised because it moves from refrigerators to both other appliances, then discusses vacuum cleaners before returning to washing machines. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “Then” and “increased” patterns. The final paragraph reports the housework trend in chronological order, but could compare the sharper early decline with the later, smaller fall more explicitly. More deliberate grouping and clearer references would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “remained stable,” “increased rapidly,” and “reached minimum value,” so the main trends are understandable. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “usage of refrigerator” suggests use rather than household ownership, and “went downwards” and “went upward” are awkward for describing graph trends. Spelling errors such as “untill,” “houshold,” and “remaind” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and use a controlled set of trend verbs, including “rose,” “fell,” “levelled off,” and “fluctuated.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the opening sentence comparing the two graphs and the sentence beginning “However.” Meaning is generally clear, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “The amount of time … were significantly fell” combines an incorrect agreement form with an unnecessary passive construction; write “The amount of time … fell significantly.” In “between 1920 to 1960,” the time expression should be “between 1920 and 1960.” Articles and number also need attention in phrases such as “with washing machine” and “in household.” Several sentences are built around repeated “Then” clauses, limiting structural variety. Check subject–verb agreement and use accurate time and comparison patterns when editing.
