IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two bar char illustrate the modifications in ownership of electrical tools and amount of time they spent on household chores, in a particular country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it can be seen that application of electrical machines was increased over given period. Refrigerator had the highest usage, while washing machine had the lowest in the final year. Figure of hours spent on housework weekly was declined over one decade.
Regarding to electrical machines, in 1920 refrigerator had just began with about zero users, after 40 years the figure was increased considerably to 90% , and peaked at 100% through the remaining years. Similar upward trend can be seen with vacuum clear , which only had 30% users in 1920 , then experienced gradual increase to 100% throughout 80 years. Finally, remained at the same rate in final year.
Washing machine started with 40% of users in 1920, the porportion increased to 70% in 1960 before slightly decreased in 1980. The figure finally increased to about 75%.
In terms of number of hours, people spent 50 hours per week in 1920 doing housework, the number faced substantial decrease to 20 hours after 40 years, further decrease to about 10 hours can be seen in 1980 .The number remained constant between 1980 to 2000, however it slightly decreased in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. It also selects useful comparisons, including refrigerators reaching 100% and washing machines remaining the least common appliance in 2019. Most reported trends are accurate, but there are notable data errors: refrigerators rose to about 90% by 1960, not after 40 years (1940), and housework fell to about 15 hours by 1980, rather than about 10. The statement that housework declined “over one decade” also misrepresents the full period. These inaccuracies and occasional over-generalisation limit the precision of an otherwise well-focused summary. Check each figure against its year and distinguish approximate values from exact ones.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering appliance ownership and housework, so the reader can follow the main progression. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Regarding,” “Finally,” and “In terms of” help signal shifts between topics. This clear structure is a strength, and the information is generally grouped appropriately. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “after 40 years” does not clearly identify the year being compared, and “Finally, remained at the same rate” lacks an explicit subject. The overview also moves quickly between trends without fully clarifying the comparison. Use more precise references to years and subjects, and connect each detail explicitly to the relevant appliance or measure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “increased considerably,” “peaked,” “gradual increase,” “slightly decreased,” and “substantial decrease.” These choices communicate the broad movements in the charts. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “bar char,” “electrical tools,” “application of electrical machines,” and “vacuum clear.” “Usage” is also less precise than ownership or the percentage of households owning an appliance. Spelling errors such as “porportion” further reduce control. Aim for standard Task 1 terms—“line graphs,” “appliances,” “ownership,” and “vacuum cleaner”—and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “before,” and “however,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors occur across verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “application … was increased” uses an unsuitable passive form, while “Figure of hours … was declined” has an incorrect article and verb pattern. “Refrigerator had just began” also has an incorrect verb form, and “Finally, remained at the same rate” is a sentence fragment without a subject. Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and some long sentences need clearer separation. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete sentence structures, especially when combining comparisons.
