IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts illustrates the proportion of electrical appliances ownership and the number of hours spent in household chores in particular country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the data reveals an inverse relationship between the usage of electronics and the number of hours spent in chores. While there is a significant upward trend across all appliances, the weekly hours of household chores declined dramatically.
Refrigerator ownership saw a sharp increase, from 0% in 1920 to 90% in 1960, while reaching its peak of 100% in 1980, and continued to maintain the percentage after nineteen years. Similarly, the ownership of vacuum cleaner rose significantly, from 30% in 1920 to 90% in 1980, following refrigerator in that period, and finally reached 100% after twenty years.
Meanwhile, washing machine experienced a considerable increase with slight fluctuations throughout the period, starting from 40% in 1920 and increased by 30 percentage points in 1960, then plummeted to around 65% in 1960 before it gradually increased to approximately 75% by the end of the period.
Conversely, the weekly number of hours spent doing household chores witnessed a substantial decline over the period, from 50 hours weekly in 1920, falling down to around 35 hours in 1940, and it continued to plummet reaching an average of 10 hours weekly doing household chores in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall pattern accurately: appliance ownership generally rose while housework hours fell, and you support this with relevant comparisons for the refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and washing machine. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. Refrigerator ownership began at about 2%, not 0%, and its 100% level was maintained from 1980 through 2019, rather than “after nineteen years.” The washing-machine sentence says it fell to 65% “in 1960”; this dip occurred in 1980, after reaching 70% in 1960. The final housework figure is about 11 hours. Your overview is useful, but “usage” is not what the chart measures, and the inverse relationship is a broad summary rather than a precise comparison. More exact reporting would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised clearly, moving from an introduction and overview to appliance trends and then housework hours. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish the main groups of information, and transitions such as “Similarly,” “Meanwhile,” and “Conversely” make the comparisons easy to follow. This gives the report a logical progression. Some linking is less precise where the data itself is unclear: “following refrigerator in that period” does not clearly explain the vacuum cleaner’s position, and “continued to maintain the percentage after nineteen years” makes the time reference difficult to interpret. The washing-machine sentence also combines several stages in a way that obscures the sequence. Use explicit years and simpler links between each change to make cohesion more consistently clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a good range of trend vocabulary, including “sharp increase,” “considerable increase,” “fluctuations,” and “substantial decline,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some flexibility in describing different movements rather than repeating one verb. However, a few choices are imprecise or do not collocate naturally with the chart: “usage of electronics” suggests use rather than household ownership, “ownership of electrical appliances” is more accurate, and “plummeted” overstates a gradual decline in housework hours. “Reached its peak” is also less suitable when the figure then remains at 100%. Aim for precise, neutral reporting language and avoid intensifiers that exaggerate the scale or speed of a change.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “while,” “although”-style contrasts, and participle phrases, and most sentences communicate the intended trend. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening has subject–verb disagreement: “The charts illustrates” should be “The charts illustrate.” In “washing machine … starting from 40% … and increased,” the verb forms are not parallel; use “starting … and rising” or “started … and increased.” The phrase “then plummeted to around 65% in 1960” also creates a confusing time reference, while “falling down to” is an awkward construction. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent agreement, parallel structures and accurate time clauses would improve control.
