Student answer (Band 4.5)

There are two charts and one is on percentage of households in different years and the other is on number of hours of houseworks per week per household. In the first chart, percentage of washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner is given in the year 1920,1940,1960,1980,2000 and 2019.In 1920,the percentage of vacuum cleaner was 40 and that of refrigerator was 30 while the percentage of washing machine was zero.In 1940,the percentage of all these lie between 50 to 60 where vacuum cleaner had less and washing machine had more than others. In 1960, the percentage of both washing machine and vacuum cleaner became 70 and the percentage of refrigerator became 90.In 1980, the percentage of refrigrator became 100 and the other two which had same percentage last time became more different this time where washing machine had 65 and vacuum cleaner had 90 percentage. In 2000,only washing machine had percentage less than 100 and had only 70 while other two had full 100 percantage. In 2019, both vacuum cleaner and refrigerator remained at the same percantage but the percentage of washing machine increased to 75.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the two charts and reports several appliance trends, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and washing-machine ownership rising to 75% in 2019. However, key figures are misreported: in 1920, washing machines were at 40%, refrigerators at about 2%, and vacuum cleaners at 30%, not zero, 30%, and 40% respectively. The 1940 description is also too vague to show the individual values accurately. Most importantly, the response omits the entire housework-hours chart and gives no overall summary of the main patterns across both charts. As a result, the task is addressed only partially, with important information missing and some data inaccurate. Include both charts and clearly summarise their contrasting overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a broadly chronological order, moving through the appliance figures from 1920 to 2019, and phrases such as “In 1960” and “In 1980” help signal the sequence. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, and the opening mainly describes the charts rather than establishing a clear overview. The repeated pattern of “the percentage of…” makes the account feel list-like, while the transition between the two charts never occurs because the housework data is not discussed. Some sentence boundaries are also unclear, particularly where a full stop is followed immediately by “In.” Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and focused detail paragraphs, using comparisons to create clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses enough topic vocabulary to communicate the basic subject, including “washing machine,” “refrigerator,” “vacuum cleaner,” and “percentage.” It also attempts comparison through phrases such as “less than 100” and “remained at the same percentage.” However, the vocabulary is repetitive, especially the frequent use of “percentage,” and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “had full 100 percentage” and “became more different.” There are also spelling errors in “refrigrator” and “percantage,” which reduce accuracy. Use a wider range of standard chart language and more precise verbs, such as “rose,” “fell,” “levelled off,” and “accounted for,” while checking spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts some longer sentences with subordinate clauses, for example, “In 1980, the percentage of refrigerator became 100 and the other two…,” and the chronological statements are generally understandable. However, sentence structures are mostly repetitive, and several grammatical patterns are inaccurate. Examples include “percentage of washing machine…is given,” where articles and plural forms are needed, and “the percentage of all these lie,” where the verb does not agree with the subject. The opening also runs sentences together without appropriate spacing or punctuation. Practise accurate article use, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, then vary simple reporting sentences with controlled comparisons and complex clauses.
