Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad rise in appliance ownership and include several relevant figures, such as washing machines at about 40% in 1920 and refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980. However, the task is only partly covered: the second graph, showing weekly housework hours falling from 50 to 11, is almost entirely omitted, and the overview does not report this major trend. Some figures are also misplaced: the 90% refrigerator figure belongs to 1960, not 1940, and vacuum-cleaner ownership was about 100% in 2019, not 90%. The response contains 145 words, below the 150-word minimum. Include both graphs, select accurate key comparisons, and check the years attached to figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: an opening statement is followed by an overview, chronological details and a concluding sentence. However, progression is difficult to follow because several years and appliance figures are crowded into one long paragraph, with abrupt transitions such as “by 1980” and “in 2019” rather than clearly separated comparisons. Linking words including “meanwhile” and “in conclusion” are attempted, but punctuation and sentence boundaries are often unclear, so the relationships between details are not consistently easy to track. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and the main comparisons, and group information by trend—for example, the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner’s rise versus the washing machine’s fluctuation. This would make the report’s structure clearer and reduce the impression of a list.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ownership,” “reaching,” “approximately” and “increased,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive. “Doing homework” misrepresents the chart’s housework, while “refrigrators” and “house holds” show spelling or word-form problems. “Ownership of all three electrical appliances increase significantly” also uses an awkward collocation, and “became increasingly common” repeats the same general idea without adding precision. Aim for accurate chart language such as “the proportion of households owning…” and vary verbs with “rose,” “climbed” or “remained stable.” Check spelling and use “housework” consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a range of sentence forms, including an overview and clauses linked with “while,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement appear in “ownership … increase,” and articles and plurals are missing in “40% household.” Several sentences run together, particularly the passage beginning “by 1940,” making it difficult to identify where one comparison ends and another begins. Capitalisation and punctuation are also unreliable, with missing spaces after commas and full stops and lower-case sentence openings such as “in 2019.” These frequent errors sometimes make the data relationships harder to understand. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas”; proofread sentence boundaries, agreement and articles.
