Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two broad patterns: appliance ownership generally rises, while weekly housework time falls. You also report several relevant figures, including 30% for vacuum cleaners and 40% for washing machines in 1920, and that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reach 100% by 2019. However, the overview is incomplete and some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were about 2%, not 0%, in 1920, and washing-machine ownership did not stop in the mid-70s; it ended at about 75%. The account also omits important comparisons, such as refrigerators reaching full ownership earlier than vacuum cleaners, and the housework figure falling to about 11 hours. Select the main trends accurately and support them with clear comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic sequence from appliance ownership to housework, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “Now” signal movement between points. However, the response is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the repeated “Now” transitions make the organisation feel mechanical rather than clearly planned. Several ideas are joined into long, confusing sentences, especially the account of washing-machine ownership and the final sentence about housework. The opening also spends space announcing that you will summarise instead of giving a concise overview. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the two chart topics, and group related comparisons together. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart topics and communicate the broad trends, using terms such as “percentage,” “appliances,” “declined” and “per week.” However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions make the report less clear. For example, “the uses of” is not a natural way to describe household ownership, and “the amount of times” does not fit the measurement of housework hours. There are also spelling errors in “vaccum,” “comparsions” and “deacade,” alongside awkward phrases such as “limited to 10 houses.” Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of households owning” and “hours spent on housework,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas with clauses, for example in “the uses of washing machine are declined … then increases,” but the response relies mainly on simple structures and the longer sentences are often difficult to control. Errors include subject–verb agreement (“graph show”), article and plural forms (“the uses of washing machine”), and verb forms (“are increases” and “are declined”). The sentence beginning “In 1920 50 hours people spent” also has an unclear word order, while punctuation and sentence boundaries are inconsistent. These recurring problems sometimes make relationships between figures and trends hard to understand. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then build longer sentences using controlled clauses, for example, “Ownership rose, whereas housework hours fell.”
