Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The charts illustrates the changes in household ownership of electrical devices such as Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner and the average number of hours devoted by domestic tasks by per week per households in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the ownership of all three household appliances increased over the period, with refrigerators and vacuum cleaners becoming almost universal by the end of 2019. However the amount of time spent on housework declined , falling from approximately 50 hours per week in 1920 to just 10 hours in 2019.
In 1920, approximately 40% of households owned a washing machine, compared with 30% for vacuum cleaners, while refrigerators were almost non exitence, By 1940, washing machines had become the most common appliance as compared to refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. In 1960, the figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners were equal, at 70%, whereas refrigerator ownership increased sharply to 90%. By 1980, refrigerators had reached approximately 100%, while the figures for vacuum cleaners and washing machines stood at 90% and 65%, respectively. In 2019, washing machine ownership increased to approximately 75%, while the other two appliances remained at 100%.
Additionally, the average number of hours devoted by domestic tasks by per week per household in 1920 was 50% but its decreased between 1960 to 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a clear overview of the main trends: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell substantially. Several key comparisons are accurately reported, including the 1920 figures, the equal 70% ownership of washing machines and vacuum cleaners in 1960, and the near-universal ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by 2019. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise. The 1940 statement identifies washing machines as most common but gives no figures, and the final paragraph says housework time “decreased between 1960 to 2019” without reporting the important intermediate plateau at about 15 hours in 1980 and 2000. Also, refrigerators reached 100% by 1980 and stayed there, a useful trend to make explicit. More precise coverage of these features would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing appliance ownership, followed by a brief comment on housework hours. The chronological sequence in the appliance paragraph helps the reader follow the data, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1920,” and “By 1980” are useful. However, the final paragraph is too short to develop the second chart and does not connect its trend clearly to the earlier comparisons. Some transitions are also awkward, particularly “Additionally,” which introduces a major chart rather than adding a small point. Organise the body into balanced sections and use clear comparisons between periods; this would make progression more complete and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased sharply,” “declined,” and “remained,” which helps describe trends and comparisons. Some less common phrasing is attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “devoted by domestic tasks,” “almost non exitence,” and “as compared to.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. There is also some repetition of “approximately” and “figures.” Choose standard collocations for describing time and household ownership, and check spelling and word forms. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish a rise, a fall, and a period of stability.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a time clause beginning “By 1980.” Most of the main comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening sentence has subject–verb disagreement (“The charts illustrates”), and the phrase “the average number of hours … was 50% but its decreased” contains an incorrect unit, pronoun form, and verb construction. In “decreased between 1960 to 2019,” the preposition pattern is also faulty. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, as in the comma splice-like transition after “non exitence.” Review agreement, pronouns, and preposition patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete and accurate structure.
