Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Intro: The line graph shows changes in household appliance ownership and weekly housework hours between 1920 and 2019.
Overview: Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased, while the time spent on housework decreased significantly from 50 to around 10 hours per week.
para 1: In 1920, around 40% of households owned a washing machine, compared with 30% for vacuum cleaners, while almost none had a refrigerator. By 1940, these figures had risen to approximately 60%,50%,and 55%, respectively. In 1960, refrigerator ownership increased sharpy to 90%, while the figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners both reached 70%.
para 2: Readgarding housework, the average time spent on household chores fell steadily from 50 hours per week in 1920 to around 35 hours in 1940. It then dropped to 20 hours in 1960 and approximately 15 hours in 1980. By 2019, the figure increased further to just 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns accurately: appliance ownership rose, while housework time fell from 50 hours to about 10. The figures given for 1920–1960 are also broadly consistent with the chart. However, the appliance account stops at 1960, so it omits important later developments: refrigerators reached 100% by 1980, vacuum cleaners reached 100% by 2000, and washing-machine ownership fluctuated slightly before ending at 75%. The housework description also says the figure “increased further” by 2019, although it actually decreased from 15 to about 11 hours. The response is one word below the required minimum. Covering the later years and correcting this final trend would make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised clearly, with an introduction, a concise overview and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. The sequence within the first data paragraph moves chronologically from 1920 to 1960, and phrases such as “By 1940” and “In 1960” help readers follow the comparisons. The second paragraph also presents the housework figures in time order. To strengthen progression further, include the missing appliance data for 1980–2019 and connect it to the earlier trends, rather than ending the discussion at 1960. The final sentence’s claim that the figure “increased further” conflicts with the preceding decline, which disrupts the logical flow of the data account.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “approximately,” “increased,” “fell steadily” and “dropped,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some flexibility in how trends are described, rather than relying on one repeated verb. A few word-choice and spelling slips reduce precision: “sharpy” should be “sharply,” and “Readgarding” should be “Regarding.” Also, “the figure increased further” is an inaccurate description of the 2019 housework data; “declined further” would fit the trend. For a more precise report, use terms such as “levelled off” for the refrigerator series after it reaches 100%, and “fluctuated slightly” for washing-machine ownership.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and many sentences are grammatically clear. For example, “By 1940, these figures had risen…” uses an appropriate past perfect construction, while “while almost none had a refrigerator” adds a comparison effectively. The main grammatical weakness is punctuation and spacing: there is no space after the comma in “60%,50%,” and the extra space in “washing machines” should be removed. The sentence structures are otherwise generally controlled, and these issues do not prevent understanding. Continue using varied comparison structures, while proofreading punctuation and ensuring that each sentence’s wording accurately expresses the intended relationship between the figures.
