Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a particular country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall,in the beginning washing machine was the most widely spread electronic appliance, meanwhile refrigerator and vaccum cleaner also continued to experience an exponential growth throughout the period.By the end of the period refrigerator surpassed both washing machine and vaccum cleaner and became the most possessed electronic appliance.

In 1920 ,not a single household had a refrigerator,30 percent of houses were equipped with a vaccum cleaner and 40 percent of household owned a washing machine.By 2019 refrigerator became the most widely owned appliance at 100 percent, washing machine stood at almost 75 percent and vaccum at 90 percent.

Number of hours of housework reported a downward streak due to the increased use of electronic appliances. In 1920 ,50 hours per week were spent on house chores, by 1940 it declined to 35 hours. In 1960 working hours decreased further to 20 hours per week.In 1980 it dropped to almost 15 hours,in 2000 it dwindled to14 hours and in 2019 it plummeted to 10 hours a week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview of the broad trends: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. You also select useful starting and ending figures. However, the overview contains a significant comparison error: refrigerators reached 100%, but vacuum cleaners also reached 100% by 2000 and remained there, so refrigerators did not surpass both other appliances in 2019. The claim that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners grew “throughout” is also too broad, since washing-machine ownership dipped from 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980. Some details are inaccurate: refrigerators were at about 2%, not zero, in 1920, and housework was about 15 hours in 2000, not 14. More precise comparisons and a corrected overview would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. The sequence from the earliest to latest figures is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “By 2019” help signal time. However, the appliance paragraph moves from the overview’s broad claim to 1920 and 2019 without developing the important intermediate changes, such as refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners by 2000. Some linking is mechanical, with repeated “In” and “By” openings, while the transition between the two chart topics is abrupt. Use clearer grouping and varied, accurate links to show how the trends compare.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “downward streak,” “declined,” “dwindled” and “plummeted,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices. “Electronic appliance” is less suitable than “electrical appliance,” and “most widely spread” and “most possessed” are awkward ways to describe ownership. “Working hours” could be mistaken for employment hours rather than housework time, while “exponential growth” overstates the pattern shown. Spelling errors in “vaccum” also detract from accuracy. Aim for precise, neutral chart language and avoid using several dramatic trend verbs where a simple description such as “fell” or “increased” is more appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “meanwhile” and the time clauses beginning “By 2019” and “In 1960.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “washing machine was” needs an article, and “40 percent of household owned” has a number-agreement problem and needs a plural noun. The sentence beginning “Number of hours of housework reported” lacks a clear grammatical subject construction. Spacing around punctuation is inconsistent, and the comma splice in “In 1920, 50 hours per week were spent…, by 1940…” should be corrected by separating the clauses or using a conjunction. More careful editing would improve control.
