Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a limited attempt to describe the charts, but it does not accurately report their main features. It says washing-machine ownership rose from 0% to 100%, and that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were at 0% in 1920; the chart instead shows 40%, 2%, and 30%, respectively, in that year, with washing machines reaching only about 75% by 2019. The key contrast—that appliance ownership generally increased while weekly housework hours fell from 50 to 11—is not clearly reported. Much of the response gives unsupported explanations about modernization and household needs rather than summarising the data. The response is also 30 words below the required minimum. Include a clear overview and select accurate figures and trends from both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic sequence from the starting year to later change, and linking expressions such as “But” and “Similarly” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the response is presented as one paragraph and does not clearly separate an overview from supporting details. The repeated references to 1920, including “in 1920 it increased to 100,” make the progression difficult to follow, while “Additionally, it increased day by day” has no clear referent. The ideas also shift from chart description to speculation about why appliances were created. Organise the response into a brief introduction, an overview, and paragraphs comparing the appliance trends and housework hours; use references that make clear which series and years are being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “electrical appliances,” “washing machine,” and “household,” so the general subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “maximum people do thier households,” “household works smoothly,” and “basic need of ever house.” Repetition of “people,” “household,” and “basic need” also limits precision. Spelling errors such as “thier,” “moderenization,” and “clearner” further weaken control. Aim for neutral, data-focused language rather than explanations about people’s needs. Useful terms for this task include “ownership,” “proportion,” “rose,” “remained stable,” and “declined,” which allow you to describe the figures more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, for example, “But, with the passage of time, people have no time to do thier household works smoothly, so people create new appliances.” However, sentence structures are often inaccurate, and these errors make relationships between ideas unclear. The opening “This chart show” has subject–verb disagreement, while “washing machine in 1920 is on 0 percent” has an unclear grammatical construction and tense. The repeated use of “in 1920” also prevents the intended time comparison from being expressed accurately. Practise forming clear past-tense comparisons, such as “Ownership rose from X% in 1920 to Y% in 2019,” and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
