Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the variations in the elertrical appliances owned by people and the percentile of time spent on doing house chores in every house in a specific country between the years of 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the use of refrigrigerator was noticed to be the lowest 1920 which later surged up and was consumed the highest in the end, alongside being same as the vaucum cleaners in 2019. Whereas, the trend of washing machine was the highest in the start of the period and lowest in the end.

The ratio of refrigerator was seen to be just above 0% which rapidly increased to 90% in 1960 and later was used the highest by 100% in 2019. On the other side, the percentage of vacuum cleaner used in households was about 30% in 1920 growing steadily and reaching to 100% in 2000 and later remained stable in 2019.

Washing machine was almost 40% used in 1920 which showed a increasing trend until 1960 and dropped by approxiamately 10% in 1980. However, rising again to just above 60% in 2019, which was considered the least used appliance at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies several relevant trends, including the refrigerator’s rise from almost zero and the vacuum cleaner reaching full household ownership by 2000. However, the overview contains major inaccuracies: washing-machine ownership was not highest at the start or lowest at the end; it began at about 40% and ended at roughly 75%, while the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner both reached 100%. The report also omits the housework-hours series entirely, despite its substantial decline from 50 to 11 hours per week. Some figures are misreported too: the refrigerator was about 90% in 1960, but the account implies it reached 100% only in 2019 without noting it had already done so by 1980. Select and compare the main trends across both charts more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing appliance trends. This gives the reader some organisation, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Whereas,” and “However” help signal relationships. However, the progression is weakened because the overview makes inaccurate comparisons, and the second chart is not incorporated at all. Some transitions are also awkward or unclear, such as “On the other side,” and the final “However” introduces a sentence fragment rather than a complete contrast. Grouping the appliance trends more systematically and adding a paragraph on housework hours would create a clearer, more complete progression. Use linking words only where the relationship between ideas is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

There is some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “rapidly increased,” “growing steadily,” “dropped,” and “remained stable.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat “went up” and “went down.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: appliances are not “consumed,” and “the percentage of vacuum cleaner used” is not a natural way to describe household ownership. “Percentile of time” is also incorrect for the housework measure, which is expressed in hours. Spelling errors such as “elertrical,” “refrigrigerator,” “vaucum,” and “approxiamately” further reduce control. Prefer precise terms such as “ownership,” “the proportion of households,” and “hours spent on housework.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including relative clauses (“which later surged up”) and contrast clauses (“Whereas…”). Meaning is generally recoverable, but sentence construction is uneven. “Whereas, the trend of washing machine…” is an incomplete clause, and “However, rising again to just above 60% in 2019” is also a fragment. There are errors in articles and prepositions, for example “the lowest 1920” and “in every house,” as well as awkward tense and agreement patterns in “Washing machine was almost 40% used.” The phrase “showed a increasing trend” also has an article error. Build complete sentences around each trend and check articles, prepositions, and clause structure; this will make the comparisons easier to follow.
