cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The first line graph provides information about how many percentages of ownership of electrical appliances has changed from 1920 to 2019. the second line graph illustrates howmuch time has spent doing housework.

Overall, the number of hours declined over the given time period in second graph. Moreover, refrigerator was the lowest in the list in 1920, while refrigerator and vacuum cleaner both topped the list in the year 2019.

It is clear that washing machine was the topper started with 40% in 1920, followed by vacuum cleaner at 30% and washing machine at a tiny fraction. In contrast refrigerator surpassed both appliences in 1960 at 90%. In 1940, all appliences were near to each other between 60% to 40%. However, vacuum cleaner also surpassed washing machine with the dramatic growth of 100%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the broad downward trend in housework and note that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reach full ownership by 2019. However, the response covers the charts only partially: it gives almost no figures for housework and does not describe the full appliance trends. Several details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators, not washing machines, began at the lowest level (about 2%); in 1940 the figures ranged from about 50% to 60%, not 40% to 60%; and the vacuum cleaner reached 100% in 2000, not through a dramatic rise at an unspecified point. The response is also 18 words below the required minimum. Include a fuller overview and accurate comparisons across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and then some details, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In contrast” show awareness of how to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the appliance comparisons are not presented in a clear chronological sequence, and the final sentence combines several points without specifying the year of the vacuum cleaner’s peak. Some references are confusing, as in “washing machine was the topper … followed by vacuum cleaner … and washing machine,” where the same appliance is repeated. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and group the figures by appliance or by period.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “declined,” “surpassed,” “dramatic growth,” and “topped the list.” These attempts show a range beyond very basic wording, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for formal data reporting. “How many percentages of ownership” is not a natural phrase, while “the topper” and “tiny fraction” are imprecise; “appliances” is also misspelled as “appliences.” Prefer standard expressions such as “the proportion of households owning” and “the highest figure.” Take care to use precise terms for the data: refrigerators started at approximately 2%, so “a tiny fraction” is vague, and the figures should be described as ownership rates rather than a list.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some attempts at complex sentence structures, for example “while refrigerator and vacuum cleaner both topped the list,” and uses past-tense forms to discuss the period. However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. In the opening, “how many percentages of ownership … has changed” has an incorrect question-like structure and verb agreement; “howmuch time has spent” is missing a subject and auxiliary structure. The sentence beginning “It is clear that washing machine was the topper started with 40%” also lacks a clear grammatical connection between its clauses. Use complete, controlled sentences, check articles and plural forms, and punctuate the opening sentence with a capital letter after the full stop.
