Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts illustrate the proportion of owing three electrical appliances and the number of time spent on housework in each households in the country from 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the ownership of three electrical appliances increased throughout the period. Whereas, washing machine ownership was the lowest among all. Subsequently, number of hours of housework each week declined over the period.

In 1920, the owning of washing machine by households began with 40%, while vacuum cleaner at 30% and refrierator was not used at that time. Furthermore, households ownership of washing machine and vacuum cleaner rose gradually to 60% and 50%, and refrigerator surged dramatically to above 50% in 1940. However, washing machine figures fluctuacted between 60% to 70% in the next sixty years and showed a slight increase nearly 73% in 2019. In contrast, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership consistently boosted over the years reached at 100% and considerably remained high.

In 1920, number of working hours started at 50%, and showed a downward trend over the period reached at 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and give a relevant overview: appliance ownership generally rises, while weekly housework time falls. You also select useful comparisons, including the refrigerator’s rapid growth by 1940 and the washing-machine figures fluctuating later. This meets the task well, although some details are unclear or imprecise. For example, the refrigerator was at about 2% in 1920, so saying it “was not used” overstates the chart; it reached about 100% by 1980, rather than only being described as reaching 100% without a clear date. The final figure for housework is about 11 hours, not 10. To strengthen the response, report key stages and endpoints more precisely and explain the contrast between the appliances’ different patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. The main trends are generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “However” help signal relationships. Some cohesion is less effective because transitions are occasionally mechanical or do not fit the meaning: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment, while “Subsequently” does not clearly show a sequence. The appliance paragraph also combines several series and time periods in a long sequence, making comparisons harder to track. Grouping the refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner trends together, then contrasting them with the washing machine, would create clearer progression and more precise links between data points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “surged dramatically,” “fluctuated,” and “downward trend.” These choices show an attempt to describe change rather than simply list figures. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “owing” is used where “ownership” is needed, “refrierator” is misspelled, and “ownership consistently boosted” is not an appropriate collocation. “Number of time” and “working hours” are also imprecise for the chart’s measure. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases such as “the percentage of households owning” and “hours spent on housework”; this will make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a sentence beginning “In contrast.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening sentence has problems with its noun phrase and agreement (“the proportion of owing three electrical appliances”), and “in each households” has incorrect number agreement. “Whereas, washing machine ownership was the lowest” is an incomplete construction, while “reached at 100%” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also missing articles and awkward sentence structures in phrases such as “In 1920, number of working hours.” Review article use, singular/plural agreement, and verb patterns, and check that each contrast clause forms a complete sentence.
