The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illlustrates the changes in the proportion of household who own three types of electrical appliances(washing machine, refrigerator, vaccum cleaner) with the time they spent while doing three different household activities(washing clothes, preparing meals, cleaning) from 1920 to 2019.
Overall,it is evident that in most household vaccum cleaner and refrigerator has the highest ownership whereas, washing machine has lower percentage in recent years.Besides, another line graph demonstrates that people used to spent more time in housework rather than present times.
Looking closely at the line graph, washing machine had the highest usage initially among all 3 appliances which commenced at about 40% which gradually rose over time upto 1940.However, we can see a slight decline in the year between 1960 to 1980 then again it started to rise in the rest of the years.Besides, usage of vaccum cleaner began at 30% in 1920 which was a little less comparing to washing machine. While over the years vaccum cleaner became popular that it soared to 100%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two broad subjects and give a general overview that appliance ownership rose while housework time fell. However, the response only partially reports the chart: it gives no figures for refrigerator ownership and omits the housework-hours trend from the detailed description. The overview also says washing machines had a lower percentage “in recent years,” but does not clearly compare their roughly 75% ownership with the two appliances that reached 100%. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: washing-machine ownership began at 40% and rose to 70% by 1960, rather than simply rising “up to 1940”; the vacuum-cleaner figure is only described as reaching 100%, with no timing. Include the key turning points and comparisons for all four series to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph. This helps the reader identify the topic and the main direction of change. However, the progression is incomplete because the final paragraph stops after discussing vacuum cleaners, leaving refrigerators and housework hours without detailed treatment. Linking words such as “Overall,” “Besides,” “However” and “While” show an attempt to connect ideas, but some are used awkwardly or do not establish a clear contrast. For example, “Besides” introduces a point that is not clearly additional, and “While” begins a sentence that is not completed as a balanced comparison. Organise the details by trends or time periods and use clear comparisons to improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership,” “decline,” and “soared,” and the reader can generally understand the intended trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are imprecise, such as “highest usage” for household ownership and “spent more time … rather than present times.” Repetition of “line graph” and “over the years” also limits flexibility. Spelling errors, including “illlustrates,” “vaccum,” and “upto,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms such as “the percentage of households owning” an appliance and “weekly hours spent on housework.” Check spelling and use varied, natural language for describing rises, falls and stable figures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “which” and “that,” but control is uneven. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “refrigerator has,” the incorrect form in “people used to spent,” and missing or misplaced articles and plurals in “proportion of household.” Several sentences are joined or punctuated poorly: “While over the years vacuum cleaner became popular that it soared to 100%” is incomplete and difficult to follow, while commas are often missing after introductory phrases. These issues sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and agreement, and divide long sentences into complete clauses with appropriate punctuation.
