Student answer (Band 6.5)

The first line graph tracks the proportion of families owning washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner from 1920 to 2019, while second line graph illustrates the number of hours doing housechores in a week over the same periods.

Overall, it is clear that the vacuum cleaner accounted for the highest proportion till the last year, and washing machine started from the highest, but till the last year, trend plummeted to the last. Whereas hours per week dropped significantly over the last period.

In detail, in 1920, refrigerator began with the lowest percentage of about 1%, which dramatically increased to reach 100% in 1980, before levelling off by 2000. Similarly, vacuum cleaners, owned by household represented 30% in 1920; the trend drastically surged to hit a peak of 100% by 2000, and subsequently, remained plateau until 2019. In contrast, despite being used mostly at nearly 40% in 1920, it climbed to 70% in 1960, and then rose to reach approximately 74% by the year 2019, making it to the last in ratio among others.

However, 50 hours per week in 1920 dropped considerably to 20 hours in 1960, and then showed a marginal decline to roughly 10 hours by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both graphs and identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours. Several figures are reported accurately, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. However, the overview contains a significant misreading: vacuum cleaners did not have the highest ownership until the final year; refrigerators were higher from 1940 onward, and both refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were at 100% in 2019. The washing-machine trend is also described as plummeting, although it rises overall from 40% to about 75%, with only a modest dip around 1980. The hours trend is relevant but could be compared more clearly with appliance ownership. More precise overview statements and fuller coverage of the washing-machine fluctuations would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework hours. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” “In contrast,” and “However.” At times, though, these links do not accurately signal the relationship between the data, and the overview’s contrast between the appliances is difficult to follow. The long appliance paragraph moves between all three series, while the hours figure is separated into a very brief final paragraph. Grouping the two near-universal appliances together, then describing washing machines and housework hours, would make comparisons and progression clearer. Ensure each reference such as “it” or “the trend” has an unmistakable subject.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “dramatically increased,” “surged,” “levelling off,” “plateau,” and “marginal decline.” This allows you to describe changes without relying only on basic verbs. Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural for chart reporting: “accounted for the highest proportion” and “used mostly” do not clearly describe household ownership, while “trend plummeted” conflicts with the figures. “Housechores” is not the appropriate form, and “remained plateau” uses the noun where a verb phrase is needed. Aim for precise, conventional collocations such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “remained stable.” The vocabulary is adequate and sometimes ambitious, but greater control of meaning and collocation would make the descriptions more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “while,” “before,” and “despite,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “owning washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner” needs articles or plural forms, and “while second line graph” also needs an article. The clause “vacuum cleaners, owned by household represented 30%” is awkwardly formed and needs clearer punctuation and a grammatical subject. In “remained plateau,” the problem is primarily the grammatical form of the expression. Review article use and make sure each sentence has a clear subject and verb; this will help your complex sentences remain accurate as well as varied.
