Student answer (Band 5.5)

The charts illustrate the changes in ownership of elextrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a certain country between 1920 and 2019.

As it is evident from the first chart that electrical appliances were not much popular in 1920, almost no household kept a refrigerator and only 40% and 30% of households kept washing machines and vacuum cleaners, respectively. But, over the years the use of refrigerators started to rise at an exponential rate alongside vacuum cleaners while washing machines kept rising gradually. This resulted in a decline in the hours of housework per week.

Furthermore,In the year 1960, the percentage of households with refrigerators reached roughly 90% while 60% of households kept vaccum cleaners and washing machines. As a result, the number of hours of housework dropped from 50 hours per week in 1920 to 20 hours per week in 1960.

Additionally, refrigerators were owned by every hosehold in the year 1960 while 90% of households owned a vacuum cleaners while roughly 52% of households owned a washing machine.

Moreover, every household became an owner of vacuum cleaner and refrigerator in the year 2000 while the use of washing machine started to gradually rise again and reached 70%.While the amount of hours spent in housework cut-down to approximately 15% hours per week.

Consequently, the chart caps at the year 2019 where every household owns vacuum cleaners and refrigerators, while almost 72% of households own washing machines and the amount of hours spent in housework have reduced to only 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern that appliance ownership increased while housework time fell, and you include several relevant figures. However, some key details are inaccurate or contradictory: refrigerators reached about 90% in 1960, not 100% as stated later; washing-machine ownership was about 65% in 1980, not 52%; and the 1960 figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners were both about 70%, rather than 60%. The overview is also implicit rather than clearly summarising the main features, and the account gives limited attention to the full decline in housework time. Select the most important trends, check figures against the chart, and state the overall comparison clearly before supporting it with accurate examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable chronological structure and uses paragraphs to group information, so the reader can follow the broad movement from 1920 to 2019. However, progression is weakened by repeated time markers such as “Furthermore,” “Additionally,” and “Moreover,” which make the account feel like a list rather than a connected comparison. The 1960 paragraph also conflicts with the following paragraph, and “Consequently” does not clearly express a cause-and-effect relationship in its final sentence. Use a concise overview followed by logically grouped comparisons, and connect appliance trends with housework hours only where the relationship is clear. Check that references and transitions support the meaning rather than simply introducing another point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “owned,” “gradually,” and “reduced,” and the main subject remains understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “electrical appliances were not much popular,” “kept a refrigerator,” and “the chart caps at the year 2019.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “elextrical,” “vaccum,” and “hosehold,” and “exponential rate” overstates the trend shown. Aim for precise, neutral chart language and use consistent terms such as “households owned” or “ownership rose.” Avoid dramatic or conversational expressions, and proofread spelling; these changes would make the description clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “while” and “whereas,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. However, errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “the amount of hours … have reduced” has subject–verb disagreement, while “a vacuum cleaners” mismatches the article and plural noun. “Furthermore,In the year 1960” also lacks spacing after the comma, and several sentences run together without a space after the full stop. Some phrasing makes relationships difficult to follow, particularly the sentence beginning “Additionally” about 1960. Practise accurate singular and plural forms, agreement with the subject, and punctuation between clauses, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
