Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line charts illustrate the variations in percentages and the number of hours in ownership of electrical appliances they spent in the same country over a period of 1920 to 2019. Overall, households with electrical appliances was higher for refrigerator whereas the number of hours of housechores per week was greater in 1920. However, need for technological tools was showed in percentage. To begin with, in 1920, the need of washing machine was highest, at 40% while vaccume cleaner was used 30% only. In contrast, therre was no need for refrigeratos and it showed 0% which was the least figure. Furthermore, fluctuaion occcurs in their demands and it was same for refrigerator and vaccum cleaner, at 100% while approximately 74% for washing machine in 2019. In 1920, the number of hours per week was only 50 while it plummetted significantly upto 20 hours in 1960. Similarly, further variation occcured and this number decreased slightly to about 15 in 2000. Moreover, in 2019, it reached to 10 number which depicts the lowest figure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and identify the broad patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework fell from 50 hours to about 11. You also report several relevant figures, including the washing-machine share in 1920 and the 2019 appliance levels. However, some details are inaccurate: refrigerators were at about 2%, not 0%, in 1920, and washing-machine ownership dipped to around 65% in 1980 rather than showing only a general rise. The overview is also unclear in saying appliance ownership “was higher for refrigerator”; it would be more useful to state that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached full household coverage, while housework time declined substantially. More precise comparisons and a clearer overview would make the key features better developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework hours. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. Some linking is effective, such as “In contrast” and “Furthermore,” but the progression within the appliance paragraph is not always clear: “fluctuation occurs in their demands” does not specify which appliance changed or how, and the comparison of 2019 figures follows without a clear transition. The overview also combines two different comparisons in a way that is difficult to interpret. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each figure directly to the trend it illustrates; avoid relying on general linkers when a precise comparison would guide the reader better.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentages,” “decreased,” “significantly” and “lowest figure,” and you attempt less common terms such as “plummetted.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “need of washing machine” and “demands” suggest demand rather than household ownership, while “number of hours in ownership” confuses the two measures. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “vaccume,” “therre,” “fluctuaion” and “occcured.” These do not prevent the main message from being understood, but they reduce precision and control. Prefer the chart’s own terms—“ownership,” “percentage of households” and “hours of housework”—and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses and time expressions, and the main trends are generally understandable. However, some sentence structures and agreement patterns are faulty. For example, “households with electrical appliances was higher” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an unclear comparison, while “the number of hours in ownership of electrical appliances they spent” is structurally confusing. “It reached to 10 number” also has an inaccurate grammatical pattern. Use a clear subject for each measure, such as “The proportion of households owning refrigerators rose,” and form comparisons directly. More consistent control of articles, agreement and sentence construction would make the information easier to follow.
