Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the broad upward trend in refrigerator ownership and the decline in housework, but it covers only a small part of the charts and does not provide a complete summary. The claim that vacuum-cleaner ownership “remained stable” is inaccurate: it rose from about 30% to 100%. The response also says there were “no” refrigerator owners in 1920, whereas the chart shows approximately 2%, and it gives no account of washing-machine ownership or the housework figures. The overview is therefore incomplete, and the body ends mid-sentence. The response is also 61 words below the required minimum. To improve, report the main trends for all four series and support them with selected comparisons and figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and then a body paragraph beginning “Firstly.” This gives the reader some indication of the intended progression. However, the response is too incomplete to develop a coherent account of the charts, and the final sentence breaks off at “The vacuum users also incrae,” leaving the comparison unfinished. The overview also contains a contradictory sequence: it says vacuum-cleaner ownership rose, then says it “remained stable.” Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and key details, and connect each comparison clearly. For example, contrast the rise in appliance ownership with the fall in housework hours, then describe the appliance trends in a logical order.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “electrical machines,” “climbed,” and “housework,” and “soared” conveys a strong increase. However, the range is limited, and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing chart data. “Electrical machines” is less precise than “electrical appliances,” while “number of people who bought refrigerators” describes purchases rather than the percentage of households owning them. There are also noticeable spelling and form errors, including “incrae,” and the unfinished phrase prevents the intended wording from being understood. Use precise terms such as “the proportion of households with refrigerators” and vary trend language with “rose,” “increased,” and “levelled off.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes some controlled simple structures, such as “The line charts illustrate…” and “The hours of housework every week fell down over the years.” It also attempts a more complex contrast with “Whereas,” but this is left as a sentence fragment: “Whereas the ownership of vacuum cleaners remained stable.” The overview’s two short statements about vacuum cleaners are also contradictory, and the final body sentence is incomplete, so grammatical relationships are not consistently clear. The phrase “climbed upto 55, 90 and 100” lacks a clear grammatical link between the figures and the years. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use clauses such as “Although X…, Y…” rather than beginning a standalone sentence with “Whereas.”
