cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given data is the pictorial representation of how the time invested in working household has been changed over the time from 1920 to 2019. We can clearly see that the time invested in household with electrical appliances have been distributed in 3 different appliance usage that are Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner.

In the year 1920 around 50 hours per week were invested in household chores in which maximum time was spent in washing machine and least was spent on Vacuum cleaner, The most noticeable thing is time spent on household chores majorly shift from Washing machine to Refrigerator.

Overall we can see that the time spent in Household chores had been decreased over the period of time from 1920 to 2019 .In the year 2000 and 2019 it can be seen that time spent in Household chores for refrigerator and vacuum cleaner are almost same and time spent of Washing machine has reduced over the time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response recognises the broad decline in weekly housework, but it reports very little of the chart’s key information and several statements misinterpret the data. For example, “maximum time was spent in washing machine” treats appliance ownership as time spent using an appliance; the chart instead shows household ownership percentages. The claim that housework “majorly shift from Washing machine to Refrigerator” is not supported, and the final comparison of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner concerns ownership, not housework hours. A stronger response would give a clear overview of the contrasting trends, then compare the three appliances with selected figures—for instance, refrigerators rising from almost none to full ownership, while housework hours fall from about 50 to 11 per week. The task is addressed only minimally because the main series are not accurately summarised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation: the response begins with an introduction, moves to a description of 1920, and ends with an overall statement. “Overall” signals an attempt to summarise the main trend, and the ideas are grouped into paragraphs. However, there is no clear progression through the chart’s main features, and the discussion jumps between housework hours and appliance ownership without explaining the distinction. The repeated framing “time spent in household chores” also makes the focus unclear. Use a more purposeful sequence: introduce both charts, give the overall trends, then describe appliance ownership and housework hours in separate, logically ordered sections. Clear references such as “the proportion of households owning refrigerators” would help connect each point to the correct data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “electrical appliances,” “household chores,” and the names of all three appliances, so the subject is generally recognisable. It also attempts more formal phrasing, such as “pictorial representation” and “most noticeable thing.” However, several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “time invested in working household,” “distributed in 3 different appliance usage,” and “shift from Washing machine to Refrigerator.” These choices obscure the intended meaning, especially because ownership is confused with time spent using appliances. Aim for accurate chart language and natural collocations, such as “the proportion of households owning” and “weekly hours spent on housework.” Avoid capitalising appliance names mid-sentence and use precise verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” and “remained stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, including “We can clearly see that…” and a sentence beginning “In the year 1920…”. However, control is uneven, and errors in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence boundaries sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “the time invested … have been distributed” has a singular subject with a plural verb, while “the time spent in Household chores had been decreased” uses an awkward passive construction and inconsistent capitalisation. The long 1920 sentence also joins clauses with a comma and then begins another clause with a capitalised “The.” Practise concise comparisons with accurate subject–verb agreement and past-tense verbs, for example, “Housework fell from 50 hours per week in 1920 to 11 in 2019.”
