Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate the proportions of ownership of electrical devices such as the washing machine, refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner in and time time taken to wash clothes, prepare meals and do cleaning in some households in a given country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the washing machine was the most preffered device in the earlier years while the refrigerator was the least. The number of hours spent doing house work reduced significantly over the years.

In 1920, the washing machine was owned by 40% of the households being the most preferred electrical appliance. This was followed by a significant rise to 70% in 1960 before fluctuating slightly and ending at around 75% in 2019. The vacuum cleaner started at 30% in 1920 and saw a drammatic rise over the period before stablelizing at 100% in 2000. The refigerator started at approximately 1% in 1920 before experiencing a sharp rise to 90% in 1960 being the most preferred device in this year. later peaked at 100% and had the same share as the vacuum cleaner.

Time spent doing chores started at a high of 50% in 1920, this was followed by a drastic drop to 20% in 1960 before further lowering to about 8% in 1980 and a further decline to 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview of the broad trends: appliance ownership generally increased, while time spent on housework fell. Several key figures are reported accurately, including washing machines at 40% initially and about 75% in 2019, and refrigerators reaching 90% in 1960. However, some details are inaccurate: housework fell to about 15 hours in 1980 and remained there in 2000, rather than reaching 8 hours in 1980; it ended at about 11 hours, not 10. The overview also says washing machines were the most preferred appliance in the early years, although they were not the leading appliance in 1920. To strengthen the response, compare the appliance trends more precisely and report the housework figures consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to appliance details and then housework, so the main information is easy to locate. Sequencing within the appliance paragraph is generally chronological, and phrases such as “This was followed by” and “before” help connect changes. However, the final paragraph contains a run-on construction: “Time spent doing chores started at a high of 50% in 1920, this was followed…” The transition from the appliance discussion to housework is also abrupt, and the refrigerator account is difficult to follow because “later peaked” has no clearly stated subject. Use separate sentences, clearer references, and a more deliberate comparison between the two charts to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of trend language, including “significant rise,” “fluctuating,” “sharp rise,” and “drastic drop,” which helps describe changes rather than simply list figures. Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural for this task. “Most preferred device” suggests preference rather than household ownership, and “time time taken” is an editing error in the introduction. There are also spelling errors such as “preffered,” “drammatic,” “stablelizing,” and “refigerator.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and control. Prefer neutral chart language such as “most widely owned,” “increased,” and “levelled off,” and proofread spelling and repeated words carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including clauses with “before” and “while,” and most of the intended meaning remains clear. Some sentence-boundary and clause-structure errors limit accuracy. For example, “Time spent doing chores started at a high of 50% in 1920, this was followed by…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. In “The refrigerator started … before experiencing a sharp rise to 90% in 1960 being the most preferred device,” the final phrase is awkwardly attached and its relationship to the main clause is unclear. The opening sentence also has a confusing construction around “in and time time taken.” Separate complete ideas with full stops, and check that participle phrases clearly refer to the intended subject.
