Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts depict information about the changes of washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and how much time was spent on housework between 1920 and 2019.

In general, it can be clearly seen that refrigerator and vacuum cleaner has same percentage in last two years and time was continuously decreased over the period of year.

Looking at the charts in more detail, in 1920, nobody owned refrigerator although this figure inclined significint to 50% in 1940 and hit the peak after 40 years by reaching 100%, which remained stable till 2019. 40% and 30% of people owned washing machine and vacuum cleaner in the initial year, after which this proportation saw a rapid increase to 70% in 1960. The owners of washing machines was under between 60% and 72% in the next years, while vacuum cleaner owners followed an upward trend and stood at 100% in 2019.

Moving to the next, 50 hours were spent on doing housework in a week in the initial year, whereas the number of hours for washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning decreased profoundly in the period of 100 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the broad patterns accurately: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework declined, and you note that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached full ownership by the end. The response also includes several relevant figures, such as 40% for washing machines and 30% for vacuum cleaners in 1920. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerator ownership was about 2%, not zero, in 1920, and it reached 100% in 1980 rather than “after 40 years” from 1940. The overview’s claim that the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner had the same percentage in the “last two years” is imprecise, since they reached 100% at different times. The housework trend is mentioned but not quantified beyond its starting point, leaving this chart less fully reported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a general overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. This gives the reader a sensible route through the information, and phrases such as “Looking at the charts in more detail” and “Moving to the next” signal transitions. The progression is not always smooth, however. The final paragraph is very brief and does not connect the housework figures to the appliance trends or report the later values. Some references are also unclear, particularly “this figure” and “the next years,” which make it harder to identify the exact series or period being discussed. Develop the final paragraph and use clearer references to each appliance and year.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “inclined,” “hit the peak,” “remained stable,” and “followed an upward trend.” These attempts help you avoid repeating only “increased” and “decreased.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for chart reporting, though: “changes of washing machine” is not a natural way to introduce ownership, “owners … was under” is unclear, and “decreased profoundly” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors, including “significint” and “proportation.” Aim for precise, conventional expressions such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “fell steadily.” Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make the description more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex sentence beginning “although this figure…” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “refrigerator and vacuum cleaner has” needs plural agreement (“have”), and “The owners of washing machines was” has a subject–verb agreement error. The phrase “in the period of 100 years” is also awkwardly constructed, while “in the next years” lacks a natural time expression. Some sentences carry several ideas and become difficult to control, especially the long sentence about refrigerator ownership. Use shorter, well-formed comparisons and check agreement, articles, and time phrases to improve accuracy while retaining complex structures.
