Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line charts illustrate the changes in ownership of electric appliances and number of hours of housework, per week, per household in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, generally all three electric appliances followed a upward trend. The percentage of the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased dramatically, while the percentage of the washing machine increased gradually. In contrast, the number of hours per week of household initially decreased steadily and then decreased slightly.
In 1920, percentage of washing machine was around 40%, and then increased slightly and reached 60% in 1940. In 1960 this figure reached 70% and then experienced slight decreased and reached around 61% in 1980. After declined, it increased gradually and reached at its peak of 71% in 2019. On the other hand, vacuum cleaner increased steadily from 30% in 1920 to 90% in 1980. this figure increased slightly in the next decade and remained unchanced for following decades at 100%.
Refrigerator increased dramatically in 1920 from almost 0% to 90% in 1960. This figure grew and reached at 100% in 1980 and remained stable for following decades.
The number of hours per week decreased considerably, from 50% in 1920 to 20% in 1960. This figure decreased slightly and reached around 5% in 1980. The number of hourse reamined stable by 2000 at 15% and then declined slightly to 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. You also identify important contrasts, including refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching 100% later. Most reported figures are close to the chart. However, some details are inaccurate: washing-machine ownership is about 65%, not 61%, in 1980, and housework is about 15 hours—not 5—in 1980. The final housework figure is about 11 hours, rather than 10. The overview also says housework decreased steadily and then slightly, but it levels off at around 15 hours from 1980 to 2000. The response addresses the task well, though these misreadings and the limited comparison of the series keep some details from being fully precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing appliance ownership and housework. This makes the main information easy to locate, and sequencing phrases such as “In 1920,” “In 1960,” and “On the other hand” help guide the reader through the years and comparisons. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The overview repeats “increased” and “decreased,” and the appliance details are split across paragraphs without a clear reason, with the refrigerator paragraph separated from the other appliance trends. References such as “this figure” are sometimes vague because several series are being discussed. Grouping all appliance trends together and using clearer references would make the progression more fluent and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of trend vocabulary, including “increased dramatically,” “gradually,” “remained stable,” and “declined slightly,” which communicates the main movements. There are also attempts at more precise expressions such as “reached its peak.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “a upward trend” should be “an upward trend,” “experienced slight decreased” is not a natural phrase, and “reached at 100%” is incorrectly formed. “Unchanced” and “hourse” are spelling errors, while “electric appliances” is less natural here than “electrical appliances.” Varying the repeated verbs and checking spelling and common collocations would make the description more precise and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while” and “and then,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “all three electric appliances followed a upward trend” needs “an,” while “the percentage of the washing machine” should be expressed as “the percentage of households with washing machines.” The phrase “experienced slight decreased” also has an incorrect grammatical form, and “After declined” needs a subject and a correctly formed verb, such as “After declining.” Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, as in “this figure.” More accurate noun phrases and verb patterns, alongside careful proofreading, would improve control.
