Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while housework time fell. The main comparisons are also well selected, including the refrigerator’s rapid rise to full ownership and the vacuum cleaner’s eventual 100% level. Most figures are consistent with the chart, such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners both reaching about 70% in 1960, and housework falling from 50 to 11 hours. One factual imprecision is saying “no residents” owned refrigerators in 1920; the chart shows about 2% of households. The overview could be more precise by noting that washing-machine ownership dipped around 1980 and did not rise continuously. Overall, the key features are addressed and supported, though a few descriptions are over-generalised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework. This makes the two charts easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Repeated use of “Whereas” and “however” creates awkward links, and the opening of the appliance paragraph—“In 1920… Whereas, washing machines…”—does not form a smooth progression. Some long sentences combine several dates and comparisons, making relationships harder to track. Use clearer topic sentences and divide the appliance trends into more manageable sentences; reserve contrast markers for genuine contrasts. These changes would make the progression more consistently logical and the links between details clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “peaked,” “declined,” and “remained,” which helps describe trends and comparisons. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “dramatic growth.” However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “residents with electrical appliances” should refer to households, “house chores” is less suitable than “housework,” and “remained the same number” is awkward for a percentage. “Washing machines remained moderate” is also unclear. Aim for precise chart language such as “the proportion of households owning…” and “levelled off at…”. The meaning is generally understandable, but more natural collocations and consistent terminology would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and “before,” but control is uneven. Some sentences contain several clauses and are difficult to manage, as in the long sentence beginning “In 1920, no residents…”; it also shifts between past and present forms (“begin,” “rose,” “remained”). There are errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction, for example “the refrigerator showed dramatic growth and washing machines remained moderate,” and “by 2019 holds only 11 hours.” Punctuation around contrast words is also inconsistent, particularly “Whereas ,” and comma splices in longer sentences. Use past tense consistently for the historical data and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. These issues sometimes make the intended relationships less clear.
