Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies some relevant appliance trends, especially the refrigerator’s sharp rise and the washing machine’s increase from 40% to 60% by 1940. However, it does not provide a clear overview of the main features, and coverage is very incomplete: the vacuum cleaner and the housework-hours series are not reported, while the washing-machine account stops after 1940. Some claims are also unsupported or inaccurate: the chart shows refrigerator ownership at about 2% in 1920, not none, and it does not establish when the appliance was invented or why ownership rose. To improve, summarise the overall patterns first, then compare all three appliances and the decline in housework time using the chart’s figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation: the response begins with an introduction and then discusses the refrigerator before moving to the washing machine. Time markers such as “In 1920,” “In 1960” and “In next 20 years” help the reader follow parts of the account. However, the progression is incomplete and uneven, with no concluding overview and no paragraph or transition covering the remaining series. Repeated phrasing such as “the percentage … was” and “usage … was rose” makes connections mechanical rather than smooth. Grouping the information into an overview and two focused comparison paragraphs, and using clearer links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile,” would make the report easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “usage,” “appliances” and “invented,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or repetitive: “percentage of use of households” is an awkward way to describe ownership, and “the usage … was rose” does not express the trend naturally. There are also misspellings such as “Refigerator,” “perentage” and “percena[t]ge,” which reduce precision. Avoid repeating “usage” and “rose”; use accurate chart language such as “the proportion of households owning,” “increased,” “reached” and “remained stable.” Check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts longer sentences and uses time clauses, for example, “In 1960 the percentage … was rose from 52% to 90%,” showing an effort to describe change across periods. However, sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make the account less clear. Examples include “the percentage of use of households,” “the percentage of people who used Refrigerator was rose,” and “the people who washing machine was 40%,” where clause structure, verb forms and missing grammatical elements interfere with meaning. Articles, plurals and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise simple, accurate comparison patterns first—for example, “Refrigerator ownership rose from about 55% in 1940 to 90% in 1960”—then combine them with a small number of correctly formed complex sentences.
