IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The lines graph illustrate the proportion of households with electrical appliances and how much time they spent for doing housework in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the proportion of household increased significantly in ownership of three electrical appliances throughout the period. While, the number of hours decreased slightly over the same time period.
Turning to the data, 40% of households owned washing machine in 1920, followed by the vacuum cleaner with 30% of households, while refrigerator recorded no ownership. By 1940, ownership of washing machine increased to 60%, vacuum cleaner rose to 50. Moreover, the ownership of refrigerator showed a repaid growth to above 50, it surpassed ownership of vacuum cleaner.
Turning to the remaining data, in 1960, the proportion of household increased to 70% in ownership of vacuum cleaner and overtook washing machine, in addition 90% of households owned refrigerator. After this year, the ownership of washing machine remained constant around 70% and both the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner were increased almost 100% in 1980 and 2000 respectively, the proportion of these appliances remained stable in 2020.
Furthermore, by 1920, households spent 50 hours for doing domestic work, it showed a dramatic fall to 20 hours in 1960. It represented further decrease to 10 at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both charts and identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while time spent on housework fell. The response also selects useful comparisons, such as the refrigerator’s rapid rise and the washing machine’s relative stability. Most figures are consistent with the chart, including the 1920 appliance levels and the 1960 refrigerator figure. However, there are a few inaccuracies or imprecisions: refrigerator ownership was about 2%, rather than no ownership, and the final year is 2019, not 2020. The overview’s description of housework hours as decreasing “slightly” understates the substantial fall from 50 to 11 hours. More precise reporting of the later appliance trends and the 1980–2000 housework plateau would make the account more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, two paragraphs describing the appliance data, and a final paragraph on housework. Sequencing by year helps the reader follow the changes, and phrases such as “By 1940” and “Turning to the remaining data” provide signposts. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly the repeated “Turning to” and “Furthermore,” and “While” begins a fragment after the overview’s first sentence. The appliance discussion also shifts between series within long sentences, making comparisons less easy to track. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each comparison directly to the relevant year or appliance; ensure pronouns such as “it” have an unmistakable reference.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership,” “surpassed,” “remained constant,” and “dramatic fall.” These choices allow you to describe trends and comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling slips that limit precision: “lines graph,” “repaid growth,” “in ownership,” and “were increased” are not natural in this context. “Slightly” is also an imprecise description of the overall decline in housework hours. Aim for standard chart language such as “line graph,” “rose rapidly,” “the proportion owning,” and “increased,” and check spelling carefully. More precise trend vocabulary would help distinguish a sharp rise, a plateau, and a gradual decline.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons joined with “while” and time clauses such as “After this year.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The lines graph illustrate” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the proportion of household increased” needs a plural noun and a clearer construction. In “After this year, the ownership … remained constant … and both … were increased,” the verb form and sentence structure are faulty. The overview’s “While, the number…” is an incomplete clause, and articles are missing in phrases such as “owned washing machine.” Practise accurate agreement, articles, and parallel verb forms, and divide long sentences when they contain several comparisons.
