IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs illustrate the trends in the ownership of electronic appliances and the hours spent per week in doing household chores in a country between 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the chart shows the proportion of households with washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. The data collected for the hours dedicated per week per household is observed to be recorded once in 2 decades.
Washing machines noted a marginal growth until 1960 however, there has been a drop between 1960 to 1980 which was later corrected. Refrigerators on the other hand, observed a massive growth peaking from 1980 onwards with 100% of the households being equipped with this appliance. Vacuum cleaners rose from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2000 fulfilling an increased demand by 70% in 40 years. This resulted in 100% of the households being equipped with both vacuum cleaners and washing machines since 2000. As a result, the number of hours devoted to washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning declined substancially from 50 hours per week to 10 hours a week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally increased, while time spent on housework fell. You also report useful details, including refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching 100% by 2000. However, some points are inaccurate or unclear: washing-machine ownership rose from 40% to 70% by 1960, so “marginal growth” understates the increase, and the fall to 65% was followed by a rise to 75% in 2019. The claim that vacuum-cleaner ownership increased “by 70% in 40 years” is also incorrect; it rose by 70 percentage points over the full period from 1920 to 2000. The overview could more clearly summarise the contrasting trends and the housework decline, and the second chart is otherwise described only briefly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, a general statement, and then details about appliance ownership followed by housework time. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand” and “As a result” help connect the comparisons. However, the overview sentence mainly explains what the charts show rather than summarising their key trends, and the statement that housework data was recorded “once in 2 decades” interrupts the main comparison without helping explain it. Some connections are also unclear: “This resulted in” implies that appliance ownership caused the decline in housework, which the charts show as parallel trends rather than proving a causal link. Grouping the main trends more deliberately and using precise references would make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “equipped,” “declined,” and “peaking,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “hours devoted to” and “massive growth.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data: “marginal growth” does not suit the substantial rise in washing-machine ownership, while “fulfilling an increased demand” introduces a demand that the graph does not measure. “Corrected” is also an unsuitable description of a later increase, and “substancially” is misspelled. More precise trend language and accurate collocations would strengthen the response while retaining its current range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrast in “Refrigerators on the other hand…” and the relative clause “which was later corrected.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the range is adequate for describing trends. Some grammatical choices are inaccurate, however. In the opening, “between 1920 to 2019” should use either “between 1920 and 2019” or “from 1920 to 2019.” The phrase “the hours spent per week in doing household chores” is awkwardly structured; “the time spent doing household chores each week” is clearer. In “the data … is observed to be recorded,” the passive construction is unnecessarily cumbersome. Check prepositions and simplify such constructions to improve accuracy and fluency.
