cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustrations give inforamtion about the percentage of households with electrical appliance and numbers of house of hours of housework per week, per household between 1920 and 2019. Overall, percentage of household with electrical appliances were increased significantly and numbers of hours per week were decreased between 1920 and 2019.

It is quite evident from the first line graph three are three types of electrical appliance were mentioned. A refrigerator was those one which had minimum percentage in 1920 rather than other two. Washing machine and vacuum cleaner were increased in a balanced way in two decades. Thus, we say that a washing machine ration was in constant throught the given period with minor decreased in 1980. In contrast, refrigrator and vacuum cleaner were increased significantly and the percentage of both became equal in 2000 and then remained constant until 2019.

Meanwhile, in the second line graph the numbers of hours of housework per week, per household decreased with the passage of time thus it fell sharply until 1960 and then they decreased in minor numbers. Finally, it became constant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall contrast: appliance ownership rose while weekly housework time fell, and you cover both graphs. You also note the refrigerator’s low starting point, the washing-machine dip around 1980, and the later convergence of refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership. However, some key details are unclear or inaccurate: the appliances did not all rise steadily, since washing-machine ownership fluctuated, and the two series did not become equal in 2000; both reached 100% then, while the refrigerator had already reached that level by 1980. The housework trend is described, but its endpoint and the plateau from 1980 to 2000 are not clearly reported. A more precise overview and a few well-chosen figures would make the summary more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on appliance ownership and one on housework. This makes the two charts easy to distinguish, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Meanwhile” help signal relationships. The progression is generally logical, but some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “Thus, we say that” and “Finally, it became constant,” where the referent is not explicit. The appliance paragraph also moves between individual trends without a clear sequence of comparisons. To strengthen the organisation, group the appliance trends by their main patterns and use precise references such as “weekly housework hours” rather than “it.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “increased significantly,” “decreased,” and “remained constant,” so the main trends can be understood. There is also some attempt to vary expression with phrases such as “fell sharply” and “in contrast.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “numbers of hours of housework,” “washing machine ration,” and “in a balanced way.” Spelling errors such as “inforamtion” and “refrigrator” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling: for example, “the proportion of households owning a washing machine” and “housework hours per week.” This would make your descriptions more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “In contrast” and a time clause with “until 2019.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate. For example, “percentage of household … were increased” has problems with articles, number agreement, and the passive form; “three types … were mentioned” is also an awkward construction. In “then they decreased in minor numbers,” the pronoun reference and clause structure are unclear. Use direct active descriptions such as “The percentage of households owning appliances increased,” and check singular/plural agreement and articles. More consistently controlled sentence patterns would improve accuracy while preserving variety.
