IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The charts provide information about interest of people having own electrical machines at there homes over the years from 1920 to 2019.
We can notice that overall ownership of washing machine, refrigerator, and vacuum cleaner has risen significantly over years from 1920 to 2019, While due to using these electrical mahines for working at home the time requirement for work has fallen over the years from 1920 to 2019.
As we can see in 1920 zero percent people have there own regfrigerator, While only 30 percent have own vacuum cleaner and 40 percent people have washing machines. After 20 years the figures are accounted about same for having own following electrical mahines, which are 50% for vacuum cleaner, 55 percent for refrigerator, and 60% for own washing machine. In 1960 ownership percentage of washing machine and vacuum cleaner was exactly same which 70 percent and figure of refrigerator are 20% higher than these. After passing 20 years 100% people have there own refrigerators, 90% have vacuum cleaner and washing machine ownership was drop by 5%. In years 2000 and 2019, 100 percent people have own vaccum cleaner and refrigerators and and 10% is risen for washing machines.
So due to the above summary people need less time for there housework in a week. As people have own facilities for daily life use, people reduce work from 50 hourse per week to 10 hourse per week during 1920 to 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both charts and identify the main overall contrast: appliance ownership generally increased while weekly housework time fell. Several key comparisons are also reported, including the rise in refrigerator ownership and the washing-machine dip around 1980. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerator ownership was about 2%, not zero, in 1920; washing-machine ownership rose by 5 percentage points from 2000 to 2019, rather than 10%; and housework fell to about 11 hours, not 10. The claim that people needed less time because they owned appliances is a plausible interpretation, but the charts show a relationship rather than proving the cause. More precise reporting and a clearer overview of the contrasting trends would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing appliance ownership, and a final comment on housework. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by repeated openings such as “As we can see” and “After passing 20 years,” and the final paragraph repeats the overview rather than developing the housework figures across the period. Some references are also unclear, as in “the figures are accounted about same” and “these,” which makes comparisons harder to follow. Grouping the appliance trends together and then describing the housework decline with selected figures would create a more consistent progression and reduce repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “refrigerator,” and “housework,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “interest of people having own electrical machines,” “time requirement for work,” and “people have own facilities.” Repetition of “own,” “people,” and “over the years” also makes the description less precise. Spelling errors, including “mahines,” “regfrigerator,” “vaccum,” and “hourse,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for concise chart language such as “the proportion of households owning…” and use varied verbs like “rose,” “reached,” and “remained stable.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “While” and a cause-and-effect construction beginning “So due to the above summary.” However, errors in tense, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to process. For example, “In 1920 zero percent people have” needs a past-tense verb and an article or preposition, while “the figure of refrigerator are 20% higher” has agreement and article problems. The sentence beginning “In years 2000 and 2019” also contains a repeated conjunction and unclear structure. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons in shorter, controlled sentences before adding more complex clauses.
