Student answer (Band 5.5)

First lets talk about the percentage change of households. The Highest change in ownership of households is for refrigerator which is about 90% increase between [redacted phone] (55% from [redacted phone] and 35% for [redacted phone]) and then the change become slow with 10% increase between [redacted phone], maintaining constant for rest time ([redacted phone]).If we talk about the lowest change, washing machine is the one with 20% increase from [redacted phone] and 10% increase from [redacted phone]. After that it decresewd 10% from [redacted phone] and then again started to increase by 5% from [redacted phone] with a total of 10%. Vacuum cleaner is in the middle keeping the constant increase of 20% every 20 years from [redacted phone] and then it becomes constant with no change from [redacted phone]. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover all four series and identify the broad patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework fell. Several comparisons are supported with figures, such as refrigerators rising sharply before reaching 100% and washing-machine ownership dipping before recovering. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the refrigerator’s final rise is from 90% in 1960 to 100% in 1980, not between 1960 and 1970, and the washing-machine fall from 1960 to 1980 is about 5 percentage points, not 10. The claim that housework fell by 15 hours every 20 years from 1920 to 1960 also misstates the pattern. Add a concise overview and report the main stages more precisely to make the summary more complete and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving from appliance ownership to housework, and phrases such as “After that” and “Finally” help signal transitions. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, so the reader has little visual guidance and the overview is not clearly separated from the details. Repeated openings such as “If we talk about” make the progression sound mechanical, while the many changes are packed into long sentences joined by “and” or “then.” Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, grouping the appliance trends together and the housework figures separately. Use linking expressions selectively and make each sentence focus on a clear comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increase,” “decreased,” “constant,” and “hours per week,” so the main trends can be understood. There are also attempts at more precise language, such as “linear drop” and “maintaining constant.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise: “change of households” does not clearly mean appliance ownership, “the change become slow” is unnatural, and “significance” is not the right noun for a marked trend. Spelling errors such as “decresewd” and “decresed” are noticeable, and “house work” is usually written as one word. Build a more accurate set of trend phrases and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt to combine clauses and express changes over time, for example with “however” and “from 1920–2019,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences. Examples include “the change become slow,” where the verb form does not match the past-time description, and “it decresewd 10%,” where the sentence structure does not clearly express a fall. Several clauses run together without appropriate punctuation, as in the opening sequence about refrigerators. Use past-tense verbs consistently for the historical data, and divide long chains into shorter sentences with clear subjects and punctuation. Practising accurate comparative and change structures will help you express the figures more reliably.
