IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs illustrates the changes in the possession of three electrical gadgets i.e refrigerator, vaccum cleaner and washing machine and time taken by house chores per household in a particular country over the time period of 1920 to 2019.
Overall, vaccum cleaner and refrigerator are the most widely owned electrical appliances in homes. Whereas, the ownership of washing machines remained low. Subsequently, the number of hours of house work decreases in the given time period.
Despite initially with no possession in 1920, refrigerator ownership saw a significant increase at its peak of 100% ownership in 1980 and then remain stable.Whereas, vaccum cleaner with 30% ownership in 1920 increases and reaches highest possession of 100% in 2000 and then followed the same path. However, washing machine with highest ownership of 40% initially increase and experienced a decline by 1960 and then gradually increases wiith approximately 70% possession in 2019 with less ownership than vaccum and refrigerator.
Futhermore, household chores per week with 50 hours initially experienced a sharp decline till 1980 with 15 hours required for housework and then saw a gradual decrease of 5 hours in the remaining period till 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while time spent on housework fell. You also select useful comparisons, including refrigerators reaching full ownership by 1980 and vacuum cleaners doing so by 2000. This supports a response that addresses the task well. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were at about 2% in 1920, not absent, and washing-machine ownership did not remain low overall; it rose from 40% to around 75%, despite a dip around 1980. The claim that vacuum cleaners “followed the same path” after 2000 is also imprecise, as ownership remained at 100%. More precise reporting of these trends would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to appliance details and then housework hours. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. Some linking is effective, such as “Overall” and “Furthermore,” but transitions are occasionally mechanical or confusing. For example, “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment after the overview, and “then followed the same path” does not clearly identify which trend is being described. The appliance paragraph also packs several comparisons into long sentences, making the sequence of changes harder to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each appliance’s figures in chronological order; reserve contrast markers such as “whereas” for complete, clearly contrasted clauses.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “significant increase,” “stable,” “decline,” and “gradual decrease.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing data: “possession” and “highest possession” are less suitable than “ownership” or “reached 100%,” while “time taken by house chores” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “vaccum,” “wiith,” and “Futhermore,” and “gadgets” is less formal than “appliances.” Aim for accurate collocations and consistent spelling, and avoid repeating “ownership” where a more precise description of the percentage or trend would help.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “and,” “whereas,” and “despite,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. The opening should be “The line graphs illustrate,” because the subject is plural. In “then remain stable,” the verb form should be “then remained stable,” and “ownership … increase” needs past-tense agreement (“increased”). The phrase “Despite initially with no possession” is not a complete, well-formed construction; a clearer version would be “Although refrigerator ownership was only about 2% in 1920…”. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as “stable.Whereas.” Check subject–verb agreement, past-tense consistency, and sentence boundaries when editing.
