IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The first graph shows the percentage of household that uses the electrical appliances from 1929 to 2019. These appliances include refrigerator, washing machine and vacuum cleaner. The rise and fall of slopes shows the increase and decrease in the use of specific electric appliance in different decades. Firstly the graph shows a rapid increase in the percentage of household that uses the washing machine because at the start the use of percentage is zero but then in just 20 years it increases to 55% , again after 20 years it reached at 90 % there is equal interval of time shows in the percentage of washing machine in next 20 years it reached at 100%. But for the vacuum cleaner there is a gradual change as it starts from 30 % it takes 80 years to teacher for 100%.but if we talk about number of hours allotted for working during this century it decreases with time as from 50 hours to 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the broad pattern that housework hours declined, and you mention several appliances, but the report only partially covers the charts and includes important inaccuracies. The graph begins in 1920, not 1929, and washing-machine ownership starts at about 40%, not zero; the figures of 55% and 90% belong to the refrigerator, not the washing machine. You also omit the refrigerator’s near-universal ownership by 1980 and the vacuum cleaner’s rise to 100% by 2000. The overview is limited, and the claim that housework fell from 50 to 10 hours misses the final figure of about 11. To improve, give a clear overview of the contrasting trends and select accurate comparisons across both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the appliance chart, discusses washing machines and vacuum cleaners, then turns to housework hours. Words such as “Firstly,” “But,” and “if we talk about” signal some movement between points. However, the ideas are crowded into one paragraph, and the progression is difficult to follow because the washing-machine figures are mixed up with other series. Several links are vague, including “there is equal interval of time shows in the percentage,” which does not clearly explain the comparison. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview, and focused detail paragraphs, grouping the appliance trends together and then describing housework hours. Use linking phrases to show comparisons rather than relying on conversational transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “electrical appliances,” “gradual change,” and “decreases with time,” so the reader can generally recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “use of percentage,” “hours allotted for working,” and “rise and fall of slopes.” Repetition of “increase,” “percentage,” and “use” also makes the description less precise. Choose vocabulary that describes ownership and trends directly: for example, “the proportion of households owning” an appliance and “rose,” “levelled off,” or “declined.” More accurate terms would help distinguish ownership rates from the amount of housework performed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences with clauses linked by “because,” “as,” and “but,” showing some effort to vary sentence structure. However, these complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow, as in “there is equal interval of time shows in the percentage of washing machine.” There are also frequent problems with articles, plurals, and agreement: “percentage of household,” “the use of percentage is zero,” and “it reached at 100%.” Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and several sentences run together. Practise writing shorter, controlled comparisons first, such as “Ownership rose from 40% in 1920 to 60% in 1940.” Then combine ideas only when the grammatical relationship is clear.
