Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two line graphs illustrate the time spent doing house chores per week and the different electrical appliances owned by different households in a particular country between 1920 and 2019. The unit is measured in percentage.
Overall, at the beginning of the period, refrigerator was the least owned electrical appliance, which experienced an upward trend over the century, reaching it peak in 2000. Additionally, washing machines was the most owned appliance at the beginning of the period, the percentage of homes with washing machine fluctuated over the years and end as the least owned electric appliance. The number of hours per week spent doing house chores declined over the century.
In 1920, no house in the country owned a refrigerator, this gradually changed over the years. In 1940 around 55% of households owned refrigerators, this rapidly changed over a forty years period reaching it peak in 1980 with all households owning fridges and maintaining the trend over the next twenty years. In contrast to homes with washing machines that began with 40% of home owning it, which rose to 70% of homes in 1960 and slightly declined over a sixty years period to about 72%in 2019. Furthermore 30% of household owned vacuum cleaners in 1920. This steadily increased over 80 years with all household owning vacuum cleaners and maintained the same trend in 2019.
The amount to hours spent doing housework per week significantly drop over the century. In 1920, fifty hours per week was spend during chores, the gradually decreased to about 35% in 1940 and one tenth in 1960 and around 15% in 1980 and 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover both graphs and provide an overview, identifying the broad rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework. Several key comparisons are relevant, including refrigerators starting as the least common appliance and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were owned by about 2% of households in 1920, not none, and they reached 100% in 1980 rather than peaking in 2000. Washing-machine ownership ended at about 75%, not 72%, and it was not the least-owned appliance in 2019, since it remained below the other two. The housework figure for 1960 was 20 hours, not one tenth. More precise reporting and a clearer overview of the final rankings would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. This makes the main topics easy to follow, and transitions such as “In contrast” and “Furthermore” help signal comparisons. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear, particularly the long washing-machine sentence beginning “In contrast to homes with washing machines,” which does not form a complete comparison. The overview also combines several trends in a way that makes the final appliance ranking confusing. Use shorter, more controlled comparisons and ensure each paragraph moves logically from the starting figures to the main changes and endpoints.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “declined,” “maintaining,” and “owned,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary wording through “house chores,” “housework,” and “chores.” However, some choices are imprecise or repetitive: “rapidly changed” does not clearly describe the rise in refrigerator ownership, and “maintained the same trend” is vague when the figures level off. “The amount to hours” is an inaccurate phrase, while repeated use of “homes” and “households” limits variety. Aim for precise trend language such as “rose sharply,” “levelled off,” and “fell to,” and use appliance terms consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and time expressions such as “over the next twenty years.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “washing machines was” and “the amount … drop”; articles and plurals are also missing in phrases such as “refrigerator was the least owned” and “all household.” Verb forms are faulty in “was spend” and “the gradually decreased,” and several long sentences are joined with commas rather than being clearly separated. These errors sometimes make relationships between figures harder to follow. Check agreement, past-tense forms, and sentence boundaries, while retaining a mix of sentence structures.
