Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of three electrical appliances and time spent doing housework. The data is for a single country and report trends from year 1920 to 2019.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances has increased in the given time period. Refrigerators has seen the most inclining trend, with vacuum cleaners being the second. They both end up being the appliances that every household used by 2019. Washing machines faced a slight decline at point but the ownership has increased overall.

Refrigerators started with zero owners in 1920. By 1980, every household had a refrigerator and this trend stayed the same till 2019. During 1920s around thirty percent of households had vacuum cleaners. The trend started to grew and by 2000 every household had a vacuum cleaner. The trend for washing machines increased from 1920 to 1960. Then it faced a little decline for two decades. Eventually climbing up to seventy five percent by 2019.

On the other hand, the trend for the number of hours of housework (washing clothes, preparing meals, cleaning) per week, per household decreased in the given time span. During 1920s each household was spending around fifty hours per week on housework. Then with time a sharp decline has been seen in the hours. By 2019, each household was giving around eleven hours per week to housework.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework fell. You also identify important comparisons, including refrigerators reaching full household ownership by 1980 and vacuum cleaners doing so by 2000, while washing machines remained below that level. Most reported figures and trends match the chart. However, the claim that refrigerators started with “zero owners” is inaccurate: ownership was about 2%, and the washing-machine dip occurred from 1960 to 1980. The overview’s description of refrigerators as having the “most inclining trend” is also broad, since vacuum-cleaner ownership rose substantially too. More precise wording and a clearer comparison of the housework decline with appliance growth would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. The progression is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Then,” and “On the other hand” help signal the relationships between points. The appliance paragraph moves through the series in a sensible order, while the final paragraph clearly contrasts the decline in housework with rising ownership. Some connections are less smooth: “Eventually climbing up” is a sentence fragment, and “During 1920s” is repeated without a precise transition between the appliance trends. Use complete sentences and vary the links between time points and comparisons to make the progression more consistently fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “decline,” “increased,” and “per week,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “sharp decline” and “inclining trend,” but some combinations are unnatural or imprecise. For example, “most inclining trend” would be better expressed as “largest increase,” and “every household had” could be replaced with the more concise “ownership reached 100%.” “The trend started to grew” contains an incorrect word form, while “giving around eleven hours” is an awkward collocation. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations rather than repeatedly using “trend” and general verbs such as “increased.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “By 1980, every household had a refrigerator” and the contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” Most errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the trends, but some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “The data is for a single country and report trends,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “Refrigerators has seen” also has an agreement error. “The trend started to grew” uses the wrong verb form, and “Eventually climbing up to seventy five percent” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. There are also tense inconsistencies, such as “a sharp decline has been seen” within a past-period description. Check agreement, verb forms, and sentence completeness while retaining varied sentence structures.
