Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two broad themes and give some accurate starting and ending figures: washing-machine ownership was about 40% in 1920, refrigerators were almost absent, and housework fell from 50 to roughly 10 hours by 2019. However, the task is only partially covered. Most of the appliance trends between those years are omitted, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. The overview also makes a general claim about appliances reducing workload without summarising the main pattern across all series. The response is 138 words, below the required 150. To strengthen the report, include a concise overview and select key intermediate figures and comparisons for each chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, a general overview, and then comments on appliance ownership and housework. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and phrases such as “Whereas” and “The second chart” attempt to connect information. However, progression is limited because the appliance discussion gives only 1920 data, then jumps to the final housework figure without describing the intervening trends. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “Whereas” beginning a fragment and “Moreover” joining ideas that do not form a clear contrast. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the overview and the two charts, and organise comparisons chronologically or by major trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “appliances,” “households,” and “hours per week,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the report awkward: “changes of ownership,” “time spent in doing these households,” and “increased use to home appliances.” “Usage” is also less precise than “ownership” when describing the percentage of households that possess an appliance. There are spelling and word-form problems in “lessoning” and “work load.” Aim for accurate, repeated chart language such as “the proportion of households owning” and “weekly housework hours,” rather than trying to make unsupported claims about appliances’ effects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “The chart shows” and the clause introduced by “while.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. In the opening, “compares the changes … with the time spent” uses an unclear comparison pattern; “the how” is an incorrect construction, and “have became” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence about the second chart also has an unclear subject and tense sequence: “people were spending … while … it has been dropped down.” Capitalisation after “Overall” and punctuation around the overview are inconsistent. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check verb forms, clause structure, and punctuation before adding complexity.
