IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given line graphs show ownership of electrical appliances and time spent doing household chores in a country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, the ownership of all three appliances increased over time reaching its peak in 2019. On the other hand, the time spent doing chores per household in a week decreased.
To begin with, the possession of refrigerator started with null in 1920 and surged over the years reaching 100% in the years 1980 and 2000.
As for washing machine, the ownership began with 40% increasing to 70% in 1960 and then suffered a decline of almost 9% in 1980. Later it increased to slightly more than 70% in 2019.
Vaccum cleaner ownership increased gradually from 30% to 100% during the years 1920 to 2019.
As far as time spent on household chores is concerned, it decreased from 50 hours to about 10 hours from 1920 to 2019.
Linking the both graphs, it is evident that the households chores consumed less time with the increase in the ownership of various electronic appliances over time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the main contrast: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. The response also reports several key figures accurately, including washing-machine ownership at 40% in 1920 and 70% in 1960, and the decline in housework from 50 to about 10 hours. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise. The refrigerator began at about 2%, rather than “null,” and reached 100% by 1980, remaining there through 2019; the final year is omitted. The vacuum-cleaner trend is summarised but lacks useful intermediate comparisons, and the washing-machine fall is closer to five percentage points than almost nine. More precise reporting of these stages would make the coverage more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, separate descriptions of appliance ownership, and a final comparison with housework hours. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “As far as time spent…” help signal the progression, and the reader can follow the main trends without difficulty. The final sentence usefully connects the two graphs, although it repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct comparison. To make cohesion more flexible, group related appliance trends together and compare their rates or endpoints directly, rather than presenting each as an isolated item. Also avoid slightly awkward linking, as in “Linking the both graphs,” which interrupts an otherwise logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied range for describing trends, including “surged,” “decline,” “gradually,” and “decreased,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some less common choices show an attempt to vary vocabulary, but several are imprecise or unnatural in this context: refrigerator ownership did not start with “null,” and “suffered a decline” is unnecessarily evaluative for a neutral chart report. “Possession” and “ownership” are also repeated, while “household chores” and “housework” could be used more consistently. There is a spelling error in “Vaccum,” and “slightly more than 70%” is vague when the chart gives a clearer approximate figure. More precise, neutral collocations would strengthen the range and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview contrast “On the other hand…” and the clause “As far as time spent… is concerned.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain, however. In “reaching its peak in 2019,” the singular pronoun does not agree clearly with “all three appliances”; use “reaching their highest levels” or recast the sentence. The phrase “the years 1980 and 2000” is awkwardly formed, and “Linking the both graphs” has an incorrect article construction. There are also inconsistent spaces before punctuation, such as before the comma after “reaching.” Greater control of agreement, articles, and sentence editing would make the varied structures more accurate.
