Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad trends accurately: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework declined. You also include several relevant figures, such as 50 hours in 1920, 35 in 1940 and 20 in 1960. However, the account is only partial and some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the refrigerator reached 100% by 1980, not 2019, and the vacuum cleaner reached 100% by 2000. The washing-machine trend is not clearly described, including its dip from 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980. The final housework figure is about 11 hours, rather than a further 10-hour decrease. The response is also 17 words below the 150-word minimum. Add a clearer overview and report the main appliance milestones accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of appliance ownership and housework. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is grouped. However, progression within the appliance paragraph is difficult to follow, especially in “In 1920, had 40% of household the washing machine grew fastest” and the sequence about refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. Linking expressions such as “In contract” and “If then” are inaccurate, and the relationships between figures are not made clear. Organise the appliance data in chronological order, using one sentence for each key period or comparison, and use simple, accurate transitions such as “By 1980” and “Meanwhile.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased,” “decreased significantly,” and “per week,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited, and several word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors make parts of the report hard to understand. Examples include “In contract” for “In contrast,” “various” where a comparison is needed, and “became very common in household.” Appliance names are also repeated without much variation. Use precise trend language such as “rose,” “levelled off,” and “declined,” and describe proportions with phrases like “the share of households owning…” Check spelling and use natural combinations such as “households” and “hours of housework.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the opening sentence communicates the general purpose of the graph. However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and plurals frequently make meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “In 1920, had 40% of household the washing machine grew fastest” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “people spent around 50 hour” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “If then decreasing” is also incomplete. Build clear subject–verb sentences, for example, “In 1920, 40% of households owned a washing machine,” and check articles, plural endings, and verb forms. Short, accurate sentences would improve clarity before you attempt more complex comparisons.
