Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graphs illustrate the percentage of ownership of electrical appliances and the time spent by households doing housework in one country between 1920 ans 2019.

Overall, It is evident that the percentage of vacuum cleaner and refigrigerator experienced considerable growth throughout the period, while the figure of washing machine showed gradual growth over the same period. On the other hand, number of hours per week saw a gradual decline.

Regardig to the percentage of households with electrical appliances, the percentage of washing machine increased marganily, starting from 40% in 1920 and ending at roughly 62% in 2019, before showing a small dip in 1980 at 55%. The figure of refrigerator rose dramatically, starting at and then levelled off at 100% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and declining housework time, and your overview mentions the strong growth in refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership. However, the response only partially reports the charts: the second chart is not described with any figures, and the vacuum-cleaner trend is not supported with details. Some washing-machine data are inaccurate: it ends at about 75%, not 62%, and its dip in 1980 is to about 65%, not 55%. The refrigerator sentence leaves its starting value blank, despite the chart showing about 2% in 1920. The response is also 27 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. Include key figures and comparisons for all series to make the summary complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning with appliance details. The overview’s contrast between appliance ownership and housework hours gives the reader a useful organising idea. However, the report stops before completing its coverage, so there is no clear progression through all the information, particularly the housework chart and vacuum-cleaner figures. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “Regardig to” signal relationships, but the final transition is awkward and the last sentence is incomplete in its data. Develop a separate paragraph for the housework trend and use clear sequencing to compare the appliance series.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “levelled off,” “considerable growth,” and “gradual decline,” which helps communicate the main trends. There is also some repetition of “figure” and “percentage,” and several spelling errors—“ans,” “refigrigerator,” “Regardig,” and “marganily”—make the writing less controlled. Some collocations are imprecise: “percentage of ownership” and “percentage of washing machine” would be more naturally expressed as “proportion of households owning appliances” and “washing-machine ownership.” Aim for accurate spelling and vary the language for describing increases, decreases, and stable figures. These improvements would make the limited range more precise and easier to read.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “while” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” Most of the basic meaning remains understandable, but there are errors in sentence construction and grammatical control. For example, “the percentage of vacuum cleaner and refigrigerator experienced” has an unclear subject and agreement; “number of hours per week” needs a determiner (“the number”); and “starting at and then levelled off” is incomplete because the starting value is missing. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Overall, It.” Use complete clauses with clear subjects, check articles and agreement, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
