Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar charts provide information about the ownership changes of household electrical appliances and the number of hours spent per week on household chores in a particular country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of households with electrical appliances has increased over the years, while the number of hours of housework per week decreased gradually. The ownership of home appliances like refrigerator and vaccum machine grew up significantly during the earlier stages of the period.

In 1920, the proportion of households with refrigerator was near zero. However, the figure rised dramatically and ultimately peaked by 1980 at 90%. Vaccum cleaner also followed a similar trend starting with 30% in 1960, By 2000, it matched the figure of refrigerator at approximately 90%. Meanwhile, washing machine followed a different pattern. Initially, the figure for washing machine was around 40%, and it peaked to 70% by 1960. From 1980 to 2000, the figure remained stable.

Regarding the number of hours spent of housework, the figure started with 50% and de

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad contrast between rising appliance ownership and falling housework time, and you include several relevant figures. However, key data are misreported: refrigerators reach 100% by 1980, not 90%, and vacuum-cleaner ownership begins at 30% in 1920, not 1960; it reaches 100% by 2000, rather than approximately 90%. The washing-machine account also misses its later recovery to 75% in 2019. Most importantly, the final discussion of housework is cut off after “started with 50% and de”, so this major series is not summarised. The overview is relevant but broad, and the appliance comparisons are incomplete. Select the main turning points accurately and give a complete account of both charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for appliance ownership and housework. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Meanwhile” help signal relationships between points. This gives the reader a coherent general route through the information. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly at “and de”, leaving the housework trend unfinished and disrupting progression. Within the appliance paragraph, several figures are presented in sequence without consistently clear comparisons across years, and the overview does not preview the most important endpoint patterns. Use complete paragraphs and organise details around clear comparisons—for example, the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reaching full ownership, contrasted with the washing machine’s slower rise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership,” “peaked,” “remained stable,” and “gradually.” These choices generally make the subject clear, and phrases such as “followed a similar trend” help describe change. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices: “bar charts” does not accurately describe the line graphs, “vaccum” is misspelled, and “grew up significantly” is not a natural collocation for a percentage. “Household chores” is understandable, though “housework” would match the chart more directly. Aim for precise trend language and check spelling, especially for repeated key terms. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses such as “However, the figure…” and “while the number…” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, and the overview is grammatically controlled. Some errors remain. In “the figure rised,” the past form should be “rose”; “starting with 30% in 1960, By 2000” has faulty punctuation and an unclear sentence boundary; and “the number of hours spent of housework” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. The final sentence is incomplete, which also prevents the housework trend from being expressed clearly. Review irregular past-tense forms, preposition patterns, and sentence boundaries, then proofread for complete sentences.
