IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two line graphs illustrate the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours invested in housework per week in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the ownership of electrical appliances has increased by 2019. The households with refrigerator increased substantialy with almost every house having it by 1980. Similarly, vaccum cleaner also witnessed a upward trend with every household owning it by 2000. In addition, the graph for washing machine was also rising and dipped only once in 1980, before continuing its rising trend. Furthermore, with the increase in ownership, the number of hours for housework decreased over the years.
In 1920, the proportion of households with washing machine was 40%, followed by vaccum cleaner at 30% and refrigerator at approximately 1%. By 1960, the number of households with vaccum cleaner and washing machine rose to 70% each and refrigerator also witnessed substantial growth to 90%. The ownership rate for refrigerator reached 100% in 1980, followed by vaccum cleaner in 2000. In contrast, the graph for washing machine dipped to nearly 655 in 1980, before

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main overall patterns: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework declined. You also select useful comparisons, including the refrigerator reaching full ownership by 1980 and the vacuum cleaner doing so by 2000. However, coverage is incomplete: the response stops during the washing-machine comparison and does not report the housework figures or describe its decline in detail. Some data are also inaccurate or unclear: the refrigerator was about 2% in 1920, not approximately 1%, and “nearly 655” appears to be a mistaken rendering of 65%. The overview is relevant, but the key trends need fuller, more precise support across both graphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to specific figures. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “In addition,” and “In contrast” help signal relationships between points. However, the progression is weakened because the final paragraph ends abruptly at “before,” leaving the washing-machine trend unfinished and the housework graph without a supporting detail paragraph. The overview also groups several appliance trends together without a clear comparison of their different rates of change. Organise the details into a paragraph on appliance ownership and another on housework, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete point. This would make the overall arrangement more coherent and cohesion less dependent on repeated transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership rate,” “witnessed substantial growth,” and “dipped,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some flexibility in describing trends, but several choices are imprecise or awkward: “hours invested in housework” is less natural than “time spent doing housework,” and “the households with refrigerator increased” does not clearly describe the proportion. Spelling slips such as “substantialy” and “vaccum” also reduce accuracy. At this level, your vocabulary supports the main comparisons, but more precise collocations and careful spelling would improve control. Prefer concise chart language such as “the share of households owning a refrigerator rose” and “weekly housework hours fell.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Furthermore” and the comparison clause “before continuing its rising trend.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and incomplete structures are present. For example, “The households with refrigerator increased substantialy” has an unclear subject and missing article, while “washing machine was 40%” would be more accurate as “ownership of washing machines stood at 40%.” The final sentence fragment, ending “before,” also leaves the clause unfinished. Check articles and plural forms, and make sure every sentence is complete. These revisions would strengthen accuracy while preserving the range of sentence structures you already attempt.
